Below is a summary of the May 21 Select Board meeting and the agenda for the upcoming, Tuesday, May 28 meeting. Please note the meeting will be held at Brookline High School in room 204.


Also included in this update is information on Brookline's Memorial Day Services. Please join Veterans' Services on Monday, May 27 to honor and remember the service men and women of Brookline who served when they were called, some making the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedoms.

What's On My Mind

Memorial Day - Brookline holds Memorial Day services on Monday, May 27 at three locations including the Walnut Hills Cemetery, the Walnut Street Cemetery and in front of Town Hall.


A bus will depart from the Veterans' Post at 386 Washington Street at 8:30 AM for the Ceremonies at the Walnut Hills Cemetery and then continue on to the Revolutionary Cemetery for a ceremony conducted by the Daughters of the American Revolution.


The bus will return to the Town Hall for the final ceremony at the World War Monument at 11:00 AM. A collation will take place at the Veterans' Post upon completion of the Ceremonies. The full program is available here.


2024 Annual Town Meeting - Will be held next week May 28, 29 and 30 at Brookline High School Auditorium at 7:00 PM. Members of the public can attend in person or watch online. Information on Town Meeting can be found here.

Miscellaneous - The Board approved the following items.

  • $1,000 donation to support Flag Day in honor of Chou Chou Merrill.
  • Requests to hire two Economic Development & Long-Term Planners.
  • Request to hire a crime analyst.
  • $28,434 appropriation transfer request from the Police Department.
  • $37,500 appropriation transfer request from the Office of Town Counsel.
  • $50,000 appropriation transfer request from the IT Department.
  • Amend budget for Women Thriving, Inc. Project #2227.
  • Arbor Day Proclamation 2024.
  • $196,000 Extra Work Order #1 related to Town-wide Drainage Model and funded through ARPA.
  • Application for Inflammables License at 201 Sherman Road, MA, for the keeping, storage and use of 271 automobiles.
  • Application by Miraku at 9 Babcock Street to renovate location with new seating, furniture, floors, painting, décor, kitchen layout, and equipment.
  • Applications to expand alcohol licenses to include outdoor dining at the following locations:

Committee Charge - The Board discussed and approved the Charge for the Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee


Committee Appointment - The Board appointed David Brick to the Indigenous Peoples Celebration Committee.


Select Board Summer Workshop - The Board discussed the agenda for, and potential scheduling of, the Select Board’s summer workshop.


Appeal of Recent Transportation Board Decisions - The Board heard appeals of two recent Transportation Board decisions including the removal of the northbound left turn lane to provide a wider sidewalk along the Pierce School frontage and to allow allow for a driveway curb cut and parking restriction at 73 Harvard St.


The Board voted to remand the prior decisions to the Transportation Board for further review with guidance that included keeping the left hand turn onto School Street, retaining the existing garage design without a curb cut on Harvard Street, and utilizing the existing Washington Street access to the garage for entry and exit.


Budget Amendment - The Board discussed and voted to recommend no action on a proposed amendment to budget that would add $1,079,213 to the School Department’s budget with no offsets elsewhere which would result in an out of balance budget.
