Creating Unforgettable Memories and Shaping the Future
As part of the WNC Foundation's Reach for the Stars Gala, a silent auction prize provided a birthday bash to remember, showcasing the community spirit and unique experiences that this event fosters. Gabriel Singer, a student from WNC’s Child Development Center, celebrated his fourth birthday with a special public safety escort to school. Gabriel and his sister, Renee, enjoyed an exhilarating ride in Sheriff Kenny Furlong’s vehicle, complete with flashing red and blue lights and lively birthday tunes, creating an unforgettable memory.
WNC's Chief HR Officer Recognized with 2024 Woman of Achievement
Melody Duley, WNC chief human resources officer, was recognized by Nevada Women's Fund among its 2024 Women of Achievement honorees at the Downtown Reno Ballroom on May 23. During her 18-year career, Melody has worked in private industry for a major retailer, in the public sector at the State of Nevada and in higher education at WNC for the last five years. Melody is dedicated to consistent, equitable and inclusive practices, and process improvements to ensure her teams provide effective, efficient and superior services. She currently holds two professional HR certifications and seven Title IX certifications and is continually developing and expanding her skill sets.
WNC, greenUP Announce Certification of 57 Green Businesses
In May, Western Nevada College and greenUP! announced on behalf of the Nevada Green Business Network that 57 businesses have certified green for the state of Nevada through 2023.
There are 100 other businesses in the process of becoming green certified for the state.
Nursing's Spring Collaborative Simulation
WNC's Nursing Program Features Spring 2024 Collaborative Simulation
This spring, nursing students participated in a collaborative simulation with students from Emergency Medical Services, Nursing, and Certified Nursing Assistant programs. Students demonstrated their skills in real-time, facing worst-case scenarios: asthma attacks, diabetic shock, and patients requiring immediate life-saving interventions. Volunteer patients arrived, portraying symptoms and injuries that test the students' abilities. Some are provocative, aimed at challenging the students' communication skills. The students handled each scenario with professionalism and composure, reflecting on their roles in emergency situations.

Class of 2024 Spans 12 States
Western Nevada College's two commencement ceremonies recognized 617 graduates – equalling a record. The grads represented 25 Nevada cities and 12 states, with the youngest 17 and the oldest 68.
Villanueva Conquers Immigration, English Language Learning, GED to Earn Business Degree at WNC
When Maria Villanueva emigrated to the United States from Mexico City 20 years ago, she left behind her whole world: family, friends, a career and cultural traditions. She was facing many uncertainties and concerns as a teenager. But Villanueva overcame these long odds to earn a GED and pursue professional goals in finance. Villanueva achieved another milestone on May 20 when she graduated from Western Nevada College with an Associate degree in General Business.
Encouragement from Family Members, Scholarships Help Runnels Earn Degree
For someone who never thought he’d venture into higher education, Bruce Runnels II definitively demonstrated that he belongs in college.
Runnels graduated from WNC with an Associate of Business degree on May 23 in Fallon. Moreover, he graduated with academic honors (Cum Laude). “This graduation means a lot to me; I never anticipated I would pursue higher education, which is something my mother and sisters always wanted for me,” he said.
Western Celebrates Milestone
of 168 Jump Start Graduates
Since creating its Jump Start College more than decade ago, there have never been as many graduates as the Western Nevada College’s Class of 2024 produced.
WNC celebrated a record 168 graduates at graduation ceremonies on May 20 in Carson City and May 23 in Fallon. The successful Jump Start program includes nine participating high schools, three academies and homeschool students.
Pinning Ceremony Honors 55 Grads from Nursing Program
On Monday evening, May 20, WNC’s Nursing & Allied Health hosted a traditional Pinning Ceremony to honor the nursing class of 2024. A total of fifty-five students graduated from the nursing program this spring.
Trip to Convention in San Francisco Inspires Psychology Students
For six psychology students of Dr. Rebecca Bevans and Jolene Coverston, a field trip to San Francisco opened up their eyes about the possibilities in their field of study. They attended the four-day Western Psychological Association Convention, learning that scientific research isn’t so boring after all and there are topics and issues that can shape their course of study in the future.
WNC Recognizes Phi Theta Kappa Fallon Chapter Honor Society Inductees
Western Nevada College inducted seven students into the Phi Theta Kappa national honor society in May on the Fallon campus. Inductees from Beta Theta Iota included Luis Lopez-Pinuelas, Dru Mackay, Natalia Martinez de la Cruz, Aidan Rowe, Braden Sorensen, Anna Springfield and Clint Vaughn. WNC President Dr. J. Kyle Dalpe was present to honor the students at the ceremony, as were Beta Theta Iota advisers Katherine Jones and Timothy Mayo.

Artwork from Student Art Show on Display in Fresh Outlook 2024 at Brick
If you missed the 2024 Student Art Show during spring semester, the Capital City Arts Initiative is presenting many of the students' artwork in the Fresh Outlook 2024 exhibit now on display the Brick, 108 E. Proctor St. in Carson City. View the exhibit Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. through Aug. 15. The free exhibition features artwork by 19 students from WNC.
Students Enjoy Pie with Presidents, Volleyball with the Vice Presidents
May Day was a memorable one for students, faculty and staff on Wednesday afternoon at Dini Student Center. The Associated Students of Western Nevada (student government) presented Pie with the Presidents and Volleyball with the Vice Presidents. WNC President Dr. J. Kyle Dalpe, Vice President of Academic & Student Affairs Dr. Dana Ryan and student government leaders shared pies and played volleyball with attendees in this novel event.

Apply for Foundation Scholarships
by June 1; It's Time Well-Spent
Current and prospective students who haven’t applied for Western Nevada College Foundation scholarships must apply by June 1. By filling out the application, students will be considered for more than 300 scholarships ranging anywhere from $500 to $5,000.
Jack C. Davis Observatory to Host Summer Solstice Safe Viewing Event
Celebrate the longest day of the year and start of summer in the Northern Hemisphere with safe solar viewing at the Jack C Davis Observatory on Thursday, June 20. The observatory will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the event, with a countdown to the precise solstice at 1:51 p.m.
Nevada Artist Turns Bristlecone Gallery into A 'Big Deal'
Bristlecone Art Gallery at Western Nevada College has transformed into a “Big Deal” this summer, thanks to artist Joan Arrizabalaga and the Capital City Arts Initiative. Arrizabalaga’s latest exhibit in a four-decade-plus career focuses on games and gambling.

Rare Phenomenon Brings Fantastic Views of Northern Lights to Carson City
Astronomy followers were fortunate to view the spectacular northern lights May 10 and 11 when a rare phenomenon made them visible much farther south than usual. Dr. Thomas Herring, director of Jack C. Davis Observatory at WNC, photographed the aurora borealis from his home and with an all-sky camera at JCDO. "It takes very strong geomagnetic storms to produce bright enough auroras for us to see them,” he said.
Ceremony Hosted by WNC, OWINN Honors Students for Workforce Training
Western Nevada College hosted a ceremony May 2 to celebrate students succeeding in training to reestablish themselves in the workforce. Presented by the Nevada Office of Workforce Innovation (OWINN), 25 students were recognized during the Workforce Success Ceremony in Joe Dini Library.
Walk for Hope Brings Together WNC, Community for Important Issue
The national issue of suicide — particularly among veterans — touched many people who attended the Walk for Hope on May 1 at Western Nevada College.
Presented by WNC’s Veterans Resource Center and the Wildcat Veterans Club, the event was focused on not only raising suicide awareness but providing resources and empowering people to prevent suicide.
Prior to the 1-mile scenic walk behind WNC’s Carson City campus, attendees listened to heartfelt speeches from college representatives and from people working directly in the field of suicide prevention. 
Wildcat Reserve Food Pantry to Remain Open throughout the Summer
ASWN has restocked Wildcat Reserve's shelves, and it will continue to be open through the summer. WNC's food and hygiene pantry helps students and their families overcome food insecurity. To utilize the pantry, fill out the required forms at wnc.edu/wildcat-life/food-pantry.
HEPP Instructors Receive Surprise Visitor for End-of-Year Luncheon
WNC President Dr. J. Kyle Dalpe surprised the Higher Education in Prison Program (HEPP) faculty by joining them for an end-of-the-year luncheon graciously hosted by HEPP Instructor Robert Ash. The HEPP instructors teach at Northern Nevada Correctional Center and Stewart Conservation Camp. The program offers several degree and certificate pathways for WNC's incarcerated students. President Dalpe Has a Tasty Holiday Weekend
WNC President Dr. J. Kyle Dalpe had the honor of serving as a judge at Casino Fandango's Rockin' Rib Fest on Memorial Day weekend. A big congratulations to Carson City BBQ for their well-deserved win, and a heartfelt thanks to everyone who served up those delicious ribs!
