New amenities in Leisure Services

The weather is finally warming up and we have some exciting new amenities to look forward to in our Leisure Services Department! I am pleased to announce the beginning development of the new Fiddlers Canyon Park on the north end of town. The contracts have been signed and recorded. A committee of 10 people has been organized and meets regularly to develop ideas and design for the park. I am hopeful infrastructure will go in this summer and winter including sewer, water, power, water feature, trails, grading and topography established along with the roads. Hopefully, we can get a sprinkler system by this fall and plant grass. It will take several years to build and more money down the road, but it is on its way.

The Iron West Recreation Park soccer fields are now planted with grass and sprinkled. The City is planning on building a pond on site so we can use our irrigation rights to water the grass. Incidentally, there is an eagle’s nest near the pond site. We are working to preserve this habitat and future eagles. We were able to see by drone that the eagles were sitting on the nest with three young eaglets. We want people to maintain a 320 feet distance from the eagles and the pond will ensure that in the future.

A brand-new water slide was also installed at the Lake at the Hills! It is open now and ready for play, along with a new pirate ship play feature near the Aquatic Center. The highly anticipated Skate Park at Bicentennial Complex has also been renovated and is being used daily. These two projects were made possible with RAP Tax funds.

Lastly, in April we held a groundbreaking ceremony alongside the Cedar City Rotary Club and the Central Iron County Water Conservancy District to begin improvements to West Canyon Park. After many years of planning, the Rotary Club plans to create a more accessible play area near the creek and play structure for all to enjoy, while providing education on water conservancy.

If you would like to have your water meter turned off before you turn on the Stop-and-Waste sprinkler system, contact Public Works at (435) 568-2912. Please do not go into your meter barrel by yourself. The meter must be turned off and on by an authorized city water division employee.

MEMORIAL DAY: CEMETERY DECORATION GUIDELINES

To ensure a safe, aesthetic and enjoyable environment for patrons of the cemetery year-round, the cemetery staff would like to share guidelines on where to place decorative items on the headstones of your loved ones.

This not only allows our patrons to safely navigate and visit the cemetery, but also allows our cemetery crew to efficiently navigate the landscape around the headstone. Cedar City would like to remember and honor the fallen heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today.

CEDAR CITY FIRE AND PUBLIC SAFETY AGENCIES CELEBRATE LIFE SAFETY WEEK

The Cedar City Fire Department recently conducted their annual Life Safety Week with hundreds of second graders from Iron County Schools and the homeschool community. The students toured the fire station where firefighters demonstrated fire equipment, apparatus and tools.

The Cedar City Police Department taught about bike safety, and other agencies in attendance also shared about what they do.

Students always love jumping out of the life safety house window from a smoke-filled room onto a foam pad. Cedar City Fire would like to thank the program’s sponsors and surrounding agencies who dedicate their time to put on a great event each year.

A VISIT FROM THE GOVERNOR'S OFFICE OF ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY Last month, staff from the Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity visited the area to learn more about all that is going on in rural Utah.

Our Economic Development team led them on a tour with visits to the Utah Inland Port, SUU’s aviation program, and the Business and Innovation Center. The future is bright in Cedar City and Iron County!
