Continuously Improving
Due to the incredible work of so many, we are rounding out Phase 2 of our SAIL 2.0 strategic plan. The SAIL (Serving Achieving Inspiring Learning) committees will provide updates on their work to the North Ed Board of Education at its meeting on May 7, and I encourage anyone interested in learning more about this progress to attend.
Our colleagues are making great strides toward improving our organization. I thank everyone who has served on the SAIL committees and contributed to developing our strategic goals. I would especially like to recognize the committee co-chairs for their leadership and dedication:
-
Kristen Deering and Rachel White: Explore, assess and identify workspace needs.
-
Scott Schuh and Marianne Swank: Build a system to positively support staff and students through continued focus on climate, culture and wellness.
-
Marty Guiney and Lisa Poortenga: Assure fidelity of existing transportation systems, while improving upon existing systems and routines.
-
Riley Denison and Leigh Kennedy: Ensure and communicate rigorous instruction in center-based programs.
-
Shawn Biddle, Carol Greilick and Brandi Reynolds: Explore, assess, identify and address pupil accounting needs in the region.
North Ed’s strategic plan goals were crafted in response to focus group feedback and survey data from our students, staff and community. In some goals, such as those related to transportation and pupil accounting, we have engaged partners at other school districts and in the community. Taking this collaborative approach toward continuous improvement aligns with both our Vision (Partnering to ensure every learner will have pathways to a meaningful life.) and Mission (Working together to develop learners with purpose, strong schools and engaged communities.). Moreover, these efforts directly reflect many, if not all, of our organizational Values: Students/Learners First, Relationships, Integrity, Listening, Service, Diversity, Equity, Empathy and Excellence.
As we work toward the identified goals, we are making the improvements that will allow us to better serve our communities and meet the needs of our staff members, and I am grateful to be a part of such an exceptional team.
Respectfully,

Dr. Nick Ceglarek
Northwest Education Services Superintendent

Asian American, Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander Heritage Month
May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AANHPI), a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States and their contribution to American culture and history. A rather broad term, Asian/Pacific encompasses all of the Asian continent, the Pacific islands of Melanesia (New Guinea, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji and the Solomon Islands), Micronesia (Marianas, Guam, Wake Island, Palau, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Nauru and the Federated States of Micronesia), and Polynesia (New Zealand, Hawaiian Islands, Rotuma, Midway Islands, Samoa, American Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Cook Islands, French Polynesia and Easter Island).
Did you know?
According to research, the month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants.

Dinner & Discussion: Creating Community Through Conversation
The North Ed Culturally Responsive Education Group (CREG) welcomes you to join Dinner & Discussion: Creating Community Through Conversation beginning at 4:30 p.m., Thursday, May 16, at the Filling Station, 642 Railroad Place, Traverse City. These events serve as a time for anyone to join important discussions happening in our schools and communities and learn more about culturally responsive education. May’s theme is Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Check out this flyer for more information. Please consider reviewing the following video resources and questions for our Dinner & Discussion:
Questions to consider:
-
When looking at the history of systemic racism against people of AAPI Heritage, there are over 230 years of major incidents that have promoted fear, hate and prejudice, and are also used to further some political agendas. What can you do to stop the hate and violence, be an ally and promote systemic change for the better?
- Like Native American culture and history, Hawaiian culture and history has been declining in public awareness since colonization. While Hawaii is a fantastic vacation and tourist location, how might you honor their traditions and culture when visiting?
- What can you do to learn more about and support AANHPI culture? How can we incorporate the stories and perspectives of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders into our curriculum and practices throughout the year, not just during this heritage month? How can we educate ourselves and others about the history and experiences of AANHPI cultures to foster greater understanding and empathy?
- In what ways is AANHPI culture ingrained or visible in American history, culture, art, etc.? What are some key contributions that AANHPI have made to American history and culture?
- What are some ways we can actively advocate for social justice and equity for Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders to foster greater understanding and empathy?
