May 2024

Dear Readers –

What does spring reading look like for you? For many of us at Northshire, watching the world around us wake up and burst into bloom makes us want to pick up books about nature. Here are a few that we love.

Maeve loves American Wildflowers, edited by Susan Barba, a gorgeous illustrated field guide and literary anthology, packed with poetry, prose, folklore, practical botany, and beautiful art.

A few of us are slowly working our way through the anthology A Nature Poem for Every Spring Evening – a treasure chest of nature poems intended to be savored, one night at a time.

Marc Hamer’s inventive memoir Spring Rain: A Life Lived in Gardens is another staff favorite – Becky described it as “medicine to one’s soul.”

Several Northshire booksellers read and enjoyed Ben Shattuck’s Six Walks: In The Footsteps of Henry David Thoreau. Stan said “Shattuck is the perfect companion on his Thoreau-inspired ambles. The book succeeds as an extremely agreeable example of armchair travel combined with masterful nature writing.”

Finally, if you are looking for a nature book for the young folks in your life, Emily highly recommends Dennis McGregor’s rhyming picture book You Stole My Name – a fun introduction to animals and their namesakes.

We wish you a wonderful May, and happy reading.

Best wishes,

Northshire Staff

Five Broken Blades

by Mai Corland

"My first five star read of 2024. I started this one and could not put it down.” —Rebecca Roanhorse, New York Times bestselling author of Black Sun

It’s the season

for treason…

The king of Yusan must die.

The five most dangerous liars in the land have been mysteriously summoned to work together for a single objective: to kill the god king Joon.

He has it coming. Under his merciless immortal hand, the nobles flourish, while the poor and innocent are imprisoned, ruined…or sold.

And now each of the five blades will come for him. Each has tasted bitterness—from the hired hit man seeking atonement, a lovely assassin who seeks freedom, or even the prince banished for his cruel crimes. None can resist the sweet, icy lure of vengeance.

They can agree on murder. They can agree on treachery.

But for these five killers—each versed in deception, lies, and betrayal—it’s not enough to forge an alliance. To survive, they’ll have to find a way to trust each other…but only one can take the crown.

Let the best liar win.

You Like it Darker

by Stephen King

From legendary storyteller and master of short fiction Stephen King comes an extraordinary new collection of twelve short stories, many never-before-published, and some of his best EVER.

“You like it darker? Fine, so do I,” writes Stephen King in the afterword to this magnificent new collection of twelve stories that delve into the darker part of life—both metaphorical and literal. King has, for half a century, been a master of the form, and these stories, about fate, mortality, luck, and the folds in reality where anything can happen, are as rich and riveting as his novels, both weighty in theme and a huge pleasure to read. King writes to feel “the exhilaration of leaving ordinary day-to-day life behind,” and in You Like It Darker, readers will feel that exhilaration too, again and again.
