This month’s “From the Board” reference article is recommended by Kathryn Whitmore, a veteran member of the Board of Directors who also passionately helps leaders transform healthcare.
Healthcare is currently facing the most significant and consequential cyberattack in American history. On the heels of our Health + Tech ’24 conference Fireside Chat: ‘Life after the Change Healthcare Cyberattack’ exploring remediation and future proofing strategies, the interruption to patient care and the impact to financial operations for hospitals, insurers, pharmacies, and medical groups nationwide remains devastating. According to recent Becker's Health IT reports, UnitedHealth Group admitted to paying ransom, continues to investigate and recover, and has noted that data stolen by the hackers likely covers a “substantial proportion of people in America.”
While there is no single countermeasure to neutralize the threat of healthcare cyberattacks, there are collective steps we can take to be better prepared for the next attack. Industry stakeholders can share the responsibility for bolstering cybersecurity rigor, reducing the time from threat discovery to mitigation, and ultimately minimizing the impact to patient care and improving operational and financial outcomes. Maryland’s own, Scott MacLean, SVP & CIO of MedStar Health and Board Chair for CHIME (College of Healthcare Information Management Executives), was recently invited to Washington DC to bring the voice of the health IT industry to this important conversation. Scott provided testimony at the April 16th hearing in the House Committee on Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee on "Examining Health Sector Cybersecurity in the Wake of the Change Healthcare Attack." He shared details on the impact of the cyberattack felt across the country and presented key insights and recommendations for discussion.
