A Message from Bishop Mayer

Dear Friends in Christ,

We are excited about this year's youth summer camp program. The theme for camp is Psalm 23: The Lord is my Shepherd. As the waters of Ceta Creek at the bottom of the canyon form a small oasis, a ribbon of green on the high plains, we want Camp Quarterman to be a time of spiritual refreshment for the campers that will, as the psalm says, revive their souls, and will plant seeds of God's love that will follow them all the days of their lives....

Hope for the Future

By Fr. Rick Lopez (Rector), St. John's Odessa

I rarely carry cash anymore, and so it may come as no surprise that I even more rarely carry change in my pockets. A few days ago, however, I reached into my pocket and realized that I had a few coins. Digging them out with the intention of putting them in my piggy bank, I looked at the quarter, just to see what new design was on it and I noticed the word HOPE across the back of the quarter. As I looked closer, under the word HOPE, there was a name, The Reverend Dr. Pauli Murray. To read more, click here.

St. Stephen's and All Saint's Celebrates The Rev. Pauli Murray

With Lent this year falling in the middle of two historical months, Black History Month (February) and Women’s History Month (March), Father Bryan wanted to introduce the congregations to Pauli Murray, a historical figure most do not know outside, and sometimes inside the Episcopal Church. St. Stephen’s and All Saints Lenten series was a soup dinner, and watching the documentary My Name is Pauli Murray.  To read more, click here.

St. Nicholas' Ascension Day Celebration

St Nicholas' in Midland invited Grace Presbyterian and Midland Lutheran churches to join us for an Ascension Day celebration. This fun evening also celebrated the end of the Sunday School year with kites, pinwheels, paper airplanes, and bubbles in the courtyard. A balloon artist and a face painter rounded out the family fun. The menu complimented the theme: wings and angel food cake! We finished the evening by hearing the story of Jesus' ascension into heaven and praying Compline.

May 2024 Youth Update

by Renee Haney, Diocesan Youth Coordinator

Summer camp! It is going to be here before you know it. We are about 2 months out from Camp Quarterman and Camp Quarterman Junior. Friendships happen at camp. We have awesome bible lessons, exciting games, worshipful music, crafts and all the “camp” stuff going on. And we also make lasting friendships that are remembered by campers over the years. Campers who attended in the past still connect with those friends many years later. They stop to say hi when vacationing in a camp friend’s hometown. Those friends reach out when their children will be going to college far from home—to a friend from camp who will be an away from home parent. When a friend is sick, those friends from camp gather in prayer from far and near for healing. What a blessing to meet friends and keep those friends from camp for years to come. Join us for camp this summer.  Registration is open! The staff is getting excited for July 14-20 and 21-26.

May 2024 Canterbury Update

by Rev. Leann Wigner, Canterbury Chaplain

Another year at Canterbury is in the books. This week, students at Texas Tech finished up finals and completed another year of education. At Canterbury, this last Sunday, we celebrated the end of the semester and the four graduates at Canterbury who completed their degrees. It is always a bittersweet time of year to both celebrate all the successes of the students but also to say goodbye to Canterburians who will move along to the next leg of their journey.

The good news is that as Canterbury has grown, we have more and more students staying in Lubbock over the summer. In fact, this summer, we have more than 15 students who will remain in town. Over the summer, the students are planning on keeping the community going while the chaplain is away on vacation. They are planning book studies, game nights, movie nights, trips to the local farmer's market, and so much more.

It is a beautiful thing not only to see how close the Canterbury community has become, but to see how these students are taking ownership of their ministry. More and more students are stepping into leadership rolls. As we finished up the semester, we developed 10 new student-led committees. Through these committees, most of the students at Canterbury are now actively involved in the planning and management of Canterbury from the planning of the worship services, to the cleaning and maintenance of the building, to the baking of bread for the Eucharist. I am so proud of their love and care of Canterbury, and I look forward seeing the direction they lead us in the coming year.

If you are interested in helping to support Canterbury, there are many ways to do so:

  1. Donate to our Garage Sale - Canterbury's Annual Garage Sale will be on June 7-8. Please consider donating to help us raise money for our events and programs. You can deliver items to Canterbury Episcopal Campus Ministry at 2407 16th St. or call the chaplain for a pick-up (575.631-5345).
  2. Purchase a Stylish Episcopal T-Shirt - Canterbury Episcopal Campus Ministry has designed more cool shirts. Each design comes in a number of sizes, colors, and styles. All purchases benefit the programs and ministry of Canterbury Episcopal Campus Ministry at TTU. Click here to see our online store.
  3. Contribute to our Fundraising Efforts - Almost all Canterbury events and programs are supported through fundraising efforts by Canterbury students. If you would like to help support our programs and events, please consider making a monetary donation by clicking here.
  4. Consider Hiring a Student for Odd Jobs Around the House - Our students are always looking for ways to make some extra money. If you are looking for a house sitter, a baby sitter, a person to clean your house, or someone to help with yard work, consider contacting the Canterbury office to find a students who may be available to help.

We offer a big thanks to the diocese for the many ways that you love and support our community!

If you have any questions, please contact Mtr. Leann Wigner, Chaplain at Canterbury Episcopal Campus Ministry at Texas Tech at 575-631-5345 or ttucanterbury@gmail.com.
