Mental Health Awareness

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness, providing support, and promoting understanding of mental health conditions. Originating from Mental Health America (MHA) efforts in the United States dating back to 1949 by the leadership of Clifford W. Beers, who himself experienced firsthand the challenges of mental illness. Mental Health Awareness Month emerged as a platform to shed light on the often-overlooked aspects of psychological well-being. Mental Health Awareness Month has grown into a global movement, with organizations, communities, and individuals worldwide participating in activities and initiatives to break down stigma and advocate for mental well-being. It was initiated by the Mental Health America organization, formerly known as the National Association for Mental Health, and since then, it has expanded beyond national borders, gaining recognition and participation on an international scale.

Mental health encompasses our emotional, psychological, and social well-being, influencing how we think, feel, and act. It is a crucial aspect of overall health, impacting every facet of our lives, from relationships and work performance to physical health outcomes. Despite its importance, mental health is often stigmatized and misunderstood. Understanding mental health involves recognizing the spectrum of experiences and conditions individuals may face, from everyday stressors to diagnosable mental illnesses.

Preventing mental health issues involves prioritizing self-care, managing stress, building a support network, and seeking help when needed. Simple practices such as regular exercise, balanced nutrition, adequate sleep, and mindfulness techniques can contribute to mental resilience and well-being. Setting boundaries, nurturing relationships, and engaging in activities that bring joy and fulfillment also play a significant role in preventing mental health challenges.

In the journey towards mental wellness, access to resources and support networks plays a pivotal role in navigating challenges and fostering resilience. Fortunately, a wealth of resources exists to empower individuals on their mental health journey. Organizations such as Mental Health America, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) offer a myriad of educational materials, support groups, and helplines to assist individuals in need. Additionally, online platforms such as BetterHelp and Talkspace provide convenient access to licensed therapists and counseling services, ensuring that help is never out of reach.

As Mental Health Awareness Month continues to evolve, it serves as a testament to the power of advocacy, resilience, and community. By amplifying voices, challenging stigma, and promoting equitable access to care, we can collectively pave the way for a future where mental health is prioritized, understood, and supported. Together, let us stand as champions of mental wellness, fostering a world where every individual can thrive.

What is happening at The Center at Hampton House

TCHH's Western Shindig

To all of those who were able to attend our Western Shindig we hope you had as much fun as we did!! We are thrilled to extend our sincerest thanks to each of you for your generous contributions that played a vital role in making our recent Western Shindig fundraiser a rootin' tootin' success, particularly for the young adults in our program. Your support and generosity have made a profound difference in their lives and have helped us achieve our goal of creating an inclusive and empowering event.

We want to express our heartfelt appreciation for your belief in our mission to promote inclusivity, diversity, and empowerment. Your contributions have not only helped us raise crucial funds for our cause but have also provided these young adults with an unforgettable experience that will inspire and uplift them for years to come. We reckon it was a mighty fine time for everyone involved!

As we reflect on the success of our fundraiser, we are reminded of the incredible impact that can be made when individuals and organizations come together in support of a common goal. Your support has not only helped us achieve our fundraising targets but has also enriched the lives of the young individuals with disabilities that we serve, fostering a sense of belonging, confidence, and self-worth. We sure are grateful to have y'all on our team!

TCHH Garden Update

We are excited to announce a special project partnering with Boy Scout Troop 153b and 153g . Our project is to expand the garden beds and fencing for The Center at Hampton House's gardening program. This is crucial in promoting independence for our garden club members.

In addition to nurturing our garden, we're thrilled to see our fresh, homegrown ingredients put to use in our cooking club, where members learn valuable culinary skills while enjoying delicious meals.

Our goal is to expand both our garden area and our programs to accommodate more participants, enriching the experience for everyone involved. To achieve this, we are focusing on building a fence and expanding our garden facilities.

If you're interested in learning more or getting involved, please reach out to us attina@centerathamptonhouse.org, and be sure to include "Hampton House Garden" in the subject line.

Your support means the world to us and will help us create a more inclusive space for all. Thank you for considering joining us on this incredible journey!

Participant Success

My name is Jackson and I am 20 years old. I’m currently a freshman at Montgomery County Community College majoring in Networking and Cyber Security. I have always loved working on Computers and Gaming.

After graduating from Eastern Center for Arts and Technology, I knew Cybersecurity was the degree I wanted to pursue in college. My Autism diagnosis caused me to struggle a bit in academic classes, but after my experience at Eastern, I finally found a subject in school that I was really good at and really enjoyed. Using the resources available, I started working with my case manager at OVR and participated in an OVR sponsored transition event.

Then, I began working with Cheryl at The Center at Hampton House. We started by job shadowing at 3 different employers in my field of interest. She helped with my resume, interview questions and discussed options for a 90-hour paid work experience. I wanted a chance to not only work with computers or gaming, but also an environment that would help my social skills.

I was lucky to get my first choice at Classic Game Junkie in Glenside, where I’ve been shopping at for quite some time. They are a family owned business that fixes old gaming consoles, sells retro games and much, much more!

My Job Coaches, Joanne and Cheryl, have been very supportive and encouraged me to approach customers, plus interact with my co-workers. It was exactly the experience I was looking for.

Thanks to the staff at Classic Game Junkie and the Hampton House, I learned what it’s like to work in a busy retail store. Now that I completed my 90-hours, I am

excited to see what is next for me

in my future!
