Two Popular Classes of Drugs Linked to Higher Dementia Risk and Memory Problems - what are possible alternatives?

Benzodiazepines and anticholinergic drugs are common classes of medications. Doctors already knew that side effects included memory issues and confusion, but research suggests it can be much worse.                                                


Anticholinergics - a group that encompasses medications for allergies and colds, depression, and high blood pressure.


Benzodiazepines - a category that includes medications for anxiety and sleeping pills

Researchers find growing evidence of detrimental factor behind dementia and stroke risk: Air Pollution

We all know that air pollution is bad for the environment, but a new study conducted by researchers in the United Kingdom shows that it is also detrimental to brain health. Specifically, the researchers looked into how increased exposure to air pollution can increase stroke and dementia risk.

Options for Tomorrow is a Lucas DD program designed to help families we serve to plan proactively for emergencies and future care when the current caregiver is no longer able to provide support.


These free presentations (attend either one) will explain how you can use this program to ensure that your loved one will be cared for according to your standards. Informational folders with materials for the planning process will be provided.


Margaret Zotkiewicz-Dramczyk, Lucas DD Community Work Incentives Counselor, will also be present to speak about Social Security and other benefits, STABLE Accounts and Special Needs Trusts.

The new Family Ties support group for caregivers of those served by Lucas DD (of any age) will continue to meet the third Thursday each month. This group is designed to be led by parents and to be a place for parents and caregivers to share issues, concerns, and successes and problem-solve together.

Ohio Special Initiatives by Brothers and Sisters (Ohio SIBS)

Ohio SIBS is a network of siblings of people with IDD supporting one another. Their SibTalks are a virtual series for adult siblings who are caring for, or preparing to care for, their sibling with a disability. Some sessions focus on members' perspectives. Others are presentations of information for supporting the individual and planning for the future.

Kinship Caregiving Seminars From Michigan State University

Grandparents and other relatives raising children full-time in lieu of parents is known as "Kinship Caregiving." The Michigan State University Kinship Care Resource Center and the MSU Extensions offer online seminars discussing parenting topics with special focus on kinship caregivers.
