Meeting the Need: AHC Opens New Health & Wellness Suite at MonteVerde Apartments

Affordable Homes & Communities (AHC) and partner National Capital Treatment & Recovery (NCTR) held a grand opening of the Health & Wellness Suite at MonteVerde Apartments on April 29. MonteVerde is a northwest Baltimore City community for nearly 300 seniors and non-elderly residents with a disability.

NCTR, a provider of treatment for people with substance use disorders, will use the space to support residents onsite through substance misuse treatment and counseling.

“We're thrilled to introduce NCTR, who is bringing substance use disorder treatment services right to our residents’ doorsteps," Cindy Rozon, Senior Director of Resident Services at AHC, said. "This adds another layer of support to the existing health and wellness partnerships at our community.”

NEWS NUGGETS

Mural of Flavors

Residents in our Afterschool and senior adult programs at eight of our Arlington communities painted tiles to represent recipes that showcase family tradition and culture.

The Mural of Flavors is made up of 98 tiles and is permanently on display at Lubber Run Community Center. This was a partnership with the Arlington Department of Parks and Recreation’s Community Arts.

Local Police Award AHC Staff

Last month, AHC’s own Laney Parrott (left) and Rebecca Koons (right), pictured with ACPD Deputy Chief Wayne Vincent, won the Arlington County Police Department Community Policing Partnership Award. The award recognizes them for fostering connections with local police and the communities AHC serves.

Laney and Becky have helped build strong relationships between AHC communities and ACPD through literacy-building tutoring, public safety meetings, and community events.

Happy Mother's Day from AHC

We celebrated Mother’s Day by making gift baskets with the residents in our Women’s Empowerment program. This was a great way to build community in Baltimore and share some love.

Gorilla Sculpture Now Complete

The Gates of Ballston gorilla is officially done! Studio PAUSE, an organization dedicated to creating art and community, worked with students in our Afterschool program to create a mascot that they view as their protector.

Adam Henry, the artist-in-residence at Gates of Ballston who created the sculpture, led the students in activities to help them think creatively and express themselves in new ways. The gorilla is now on display at the community center.

Volunteer Appreciation Recap

Last month’s Volunteer Appreciation Event was a big success. We celebrated our volunteers with an evening of food, conversation, and recognition.

We’re thankful for the continued dedication of our volunteers and proud to have so many members of the community join us in keeping residents at the heart of all we do. Thank you to all of our amazing volunteers!
