Asian American and Pacific Islander
Heritage Month
May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. We celebrate and recognize the history, culture, and achievements of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Let us continue to honor our friends and colleagues of Asian and Pacific Island descent.
Being Asian American is forever at the forefront of my mind, and for better or worse, it is what people notice when they first look at me. Although I grew up learning to persevere, I also grew up being told to fall in line, keep quiet, and obey authority figures (sometimes without question). I had to unlearn these things to be successful in the legal world. Growing up as an Asian American helped me understand that there is so much more under the surface of each individual than what we see and how we navigate things foreign to us. It provides empathy and pride that I harness daily into my work. I get to know my clients and learn what matters to them, so I can offer a bespoke level of service to help them through their divorces because life is not one size fits all. One of my proudest moments in practicing law is giving back to the Vietnamese community in San Jose at the VABANC legal clinic by providing them with the resources and education to navigate the family law system tailored to their case. It translates more broadly to all my clients, and I am here to educate and guide people through things they do not understand because the law is foreign to nearly all my clients.
Family law attorneys practice in one of the most emotional, personal, and sensitive areas of law. It is important that we remain mindful of our clients’ diverse cultural, social, and economic backgrounds and how they may influence our cases and clients. I am proud of my Kānaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian), Korean, and Filipino heritage as these three cultures have greatly impacted my respectful, compassionate, and understanding approach toward my clients and my cases.
Angie Prudencio, Legal Administrative Assistant
I’m‎ blessed‎ to‎ identify‎ with‎ the‎ culturally-rich‎ and‎ special‎ heritage‎ of my‎ Filipino‎ background‎. Even‎ though‎ many‎ are‎ unsure‎ whether‎ Filipinos‎ “fit”‎ into‎ the‎ Asian‎ or‎ Pacific‎ Islander‎ category‎ or‎ both, we value faith,‎ family,‎ and hard work. I appreciate being part of a diverse and professional team at Hoover Krepelka supporting similar values.
Career Unicorns Podcast - Spark Your Joy
Also in honor of AAPI month, Christine Pham, Senior Associate, took time to speak with Samorn Selim about career and culture on the Career Unicorns Podcast. Be sure to catch this episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or Libsyn.
What can you expect you’ll need to disclose when you file for divorce? Often, our clients are surprised at the amount of detail required when it comes to financial disclosures, which can seem more tedious than applying for a loan.

James J. Hoover, Partner and Certified Family Law Specialist, has overseen approximately more than one thousand marital dissolution cases. He explains what to expect as far as the financial disclosure process is concerned, and why.
