It is hard to believe that it has been 10 years since the International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) was founded. Over the next few e-bites, we will look at IDDSI past, present, and future….
“S” is for Standardisation
The International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative was undertaken to help improve safety for people with dysphagia, by providing a common language that describes the various food textures and drink consistencies often used as a part of dysphagia management.
It is important to recognize that the IDDSI framework is NOT a dysphagia diet, but rather a framework of standardised terms and descriptions of food textures and drink thickness, commonly used in dysphagia management. As we alluded to in our April e-bite – IDDSI is descriptive not prescriptive.
A clinician with the knowledge and skills to assess and manage dysphagia usually makes recommendations regarding appropriate food texture and drinks consistencies. The IDDSI framework provides the tools to help communicate about the recommended food textures and drink consistencies along with IDDSI testing methods for a more objective means of checking the texture and consistency.
Many resources were developed to help use and implement the IDDSI Framework. These include tools such as framework documents, patient handouts, posters, videos, audit sheets, implementation guides and more!!

The IDDSI Funnel is the only widely available funnel that was designed with the IDDSI Flow Test in mind. The IDDSI Funnel is designed to be easy to use with IDDSI levels already marked on the funnel itself, and it is re-usable and recyclable. The funnel store (including ordering and fulfillment) will be managed by our licensed manufacturer, Sparrow Solutions Ltd., and will be an official channel to order your IDDSI Funnels
Some important information:
- IDDSI Funnels are sold in packages (100 funnels per package) or cartons (1000 funnels per carton)
- Once you enter your shipping information, shipping quotes/options will be provided during the checkout process. Please note the shipping cost does not include any duties or taxes that may be charged on the shipment.

Nepal: Welcome Nepal IRG! We are a group of volunteers from Nepal who began to work to increase professional competency, develop protocols, and implement IDDSI standardization. Our ASLP (Audiologist & Speech-pathologist) works in broad settings.
