We are nearing the end of our fiscal year, and we can certainly be proud of the accomplishments of the 2017-2018 year. We have served more children and families than ever before through our programs, thanks to the continued efforts of our members in raising funds at our Thrift Shop and administering our programs. We have many new and active members and their enthusiasm has translated into action. Many thanks to our strong leadership team; we can't operate without organization and direction from our Board of Directors, Committee Chairs and committee members. Our members respond to pleas for help and support each other, just as any family does. Each member finds an area of our organization that calls to him or her and then fills an important niche. Every cog works together to keep the machine running smoothly. We always say, "There are many ways to contribute," and that philosophy seems to ring true at Assistance League of Hawaii.
We hope to see many of you at our Annual Meeting on May 9 at Outrigger Canoe Club. We will vote on the Proposed Budget for the coming year and install our new Board of Directors and Committee Chairs. Feel free to bring a guest and share your passion for Assistance League.

As we are in our in our last month of this fiscal year, Assistance League is still actively recruiting new members. Last month, a customer was shopping at the shop when she heard a familiar voice. It was a fellow co-worker, Peggy Monell, who recruited our newest member, Noreen Wang.

At the May 9, 2018 Regular Membership Meeting, the membership will vote to approve the Proposed Fiscal Year 2018-2019 Budget, as presented at the April 11, 2018 Regular Membership Meeting.
A copy of the proposed budget is posted on the upstairs bulletin board in the Thrift Shop.
Please submit all requests for reimbursement for year 2017-2018 expenses prior to May 15, 2018.
Program Chairs and Thrift Shop Chairman, please be reminded that an inventory of your program assets is due by May 31, 2018. If your program has no inventory to report, please state that in an email message to the Treasurer.

Visitor Industry Charity Walk Will
Benefit Operation School Bell
May is the month when the Visitor Industry Charity Walk happens, this year on Saturday, May 19, 2018.
Several members will be walking. Helen Taufa'asau will be the point person and will be telling member where to meet for the 7 am start. The route starts and ends at Ala Moana Park at the McCoy Pavilion.
As participants walk through Waikiki, they will come to aid stations offering various edible goodies and drinks. At the end of the walk, lunch is offered in McCoy Pavilion.
It costs $40 to enter.You can walk the whole route, or quit when you have had enough.
We apply for a grant and get extra points if we walk or donate. In past years we have been given $1,000 to $5,000 for Operation School Bell. The money must be spent for Oahu's children. I will have information at the May meeting, or email me (dotmason@aol.com) and I'll send you an entry form. It is lots of fun, and a chance to walk with your fellow members.
It's a great way to support Operation School Bell.

We are spreading the word about
Assistance League
, and expanding awareness of our programs and the impact on our communities across Hawaii. One of the primary beneficiaries of our programs is the school system, students and their families. Individual letters were sent to each school that received Operation School Bell®, Operation Wildlife and Tutu Tutorial programs. It was also requested they publish an enclosed information article about our programs into their school newsletter that is distributed to families. A total of 88 schools were recipients of Assistance League programs this year!

Our tutus, though small in number, have an important impact on reading improvement. Cathy Young and
Joan Helbling at Ala Wai Elementary School helped in the kindergarten and second grade.They purchased two books for each of their students and others for the classroom.
The Pu'uhale Library will be open for another month with special activities including performing plays, poetry recitals and illustrating original cartoons. Reading today includes many genres. Students really turn on to graphic novels.
The Village Book Collection continues to grow, thanks to all of you. We are planning a presentation in late May. Details to follow.

Operation Wildlife has been busy this month. Ronnie Wassill and Gerri Migita had a successful two-day trip to Maui. Four Oahu schools have had presentations. Our two new member volunteers Myrtle Ching-Rappa and Shelley Carroll have been with us and learning the ropes of our Operation Wildlife program. They are very enthusiastic OWLs. We look forward to some new ideas going into the end of the school year and looking forward to the next.

The annual Evaluation Meetings were held March 14, 2018 at four venues across Oahu. Many thanks to our hostesses, Arden Moore, Joy Corbett, Peggy Monell, LaVonne Holmberg and Dot Mason. Overall, the groups noted the positive atmosphere and the enthusiastic participation during the discussions. Members shared warm memories of Assistance League over the past year, and expressed appreciations for numerous member contributions.
Favorite memories centered on active participation in programs, primarily Operation School Bell In-Store Shopping Events, and Operation Wildlife, and seeing the happy faces of children and families. Members also shared their pleasure of working together with other members in programs and at the Thrift Shop, with humor, caring, cooperation, camaraderie, hard work and a sense of accomplishment. Events where members pull together to accomplish tasks like the Christmas Work Party are particularly meaningful, as well as our interactions with customers. A good day is leaving the Thrift Shop with the upstairs in good order and sales for the day over $1,000, or even better - a $2,000 day. A sense of fellowship and a spirit of service are important themes that draw members to our organization. An extensive list of appreciations and gratitude for our awesome members was created. All member contributions are valued, and a display board of some of the expressions of appreciation is posted upstairs at the Thrift Shop.
There is strong member support to reduce business meetings to four per year in September, January, April and May. This covers the dates for voting on motions. During the other months, members like the idea of short announcements, speakers and more social time.
Members value these evaluation meetings as small group discussions for the opportunity to provide input, and make a difference to Assistance League. The primary focus remains attracting additional active and enthusiastic members and leaders; ensuring adequate member involvement in programs, with plenty of upstairs and downstairs help in the Thrift Shop.

At the April Regular Meeting,
Trish Baroody, Program Coordinator for Hale Kipa, was the guest speaker. Her presentation was very well received as she provided information on Hale Kipa and the youth aging out of foster care who we help with our donations. A photo of Trish with

A Lullaby Layette packing party was held on April 16 at my home.
Mary Kay Junk, Peggy Monell, Joanna Leiato, and I, packed 243 layettes. Peggy delivered some to Castle Medical Center,
Helen Taufa'asau delivered some to Kapiolani Medical Center, and I delivered the remainder to Kaiser Hospital.
Peggy Monell delivered 60 Malama Bears to St. Francis Hospice and I delivered 60 to Kaiser Hospital. Additional deliveries are planned and 300 more bears have been ordered.
Mary Kay Junk purchased some household items for one Hale Kipa client.
