An American Conscience: The Reinhold Niebuhr Story

A documentary about an outspoken American-born pastor, writer, political activist and one of the most influential public theologians of the twentieth century, featuring interviews with Jimmy Carter and Andrew Young. Watch the trailer.

  Last Days of Solitary

An intense PBS Frontline documentary that goes inside Maine’s attempt to decrease its use of solitary confinement — and what happens when prisoners who have spent considerable time in isolation try to integrate back into society. Watch the trailer.
Mishwar Music

A small collection of songs recorded in a refugee camp in Akkar, Lebanon, by “The Homsies,” a group of young people from Homs, Syria. An English translation of the lyrics is available. Listen now.
Rikers: An American Jail

A documentary from Bill Moyers, focuses on men and women who have endured incarceration at Rikers Island. Their stories describe the cruel arc of the Rikers experience — from the shock of entry to the extortion and control exercised by other inmates, the oppressive interaction with corrections officers, the beatings and stabbings, the torture of solitary confinement and the many challenges of returning to the outside world. Shakespeare Behind Bars

A documentary telling the story of convicted felons practicing for over a year to perform Shakespeare’s last play, The Tempest and how they are transformed by the power of truth and forgiveness in the process. Watch the trailer now.

In several recent issues of the Jesuit magazine America (circulation 45,000) , surveys indicate that:

35% of respondents would like their parish to make community service a higher priority

80% believe their parish does not do enough to address current events

18% believe religious leaders hold the most moral influence (20% believe media leaders do & 11% say political leaders)

Vic & Mary Doucette are members of St. Francis Xavier parish in Wilmette, Illinois, where they have helped coordinate the social justice ministry since 2006. They are JustFaith grads and very active in the community -- volunteering with local organizations as well as doing service work in countries around the world. Vic has spent most of his career working for the church at the parish, diocesan and national levels.
