May is Mary’s month! As we honor our earthly mothers, we also honor our heavenly Mother. And during May, throughout the Catholic world, special devotions honor the Virgin Mary. “May Crowning” is a traditional Catholic ritual that occurs in the month of May, and it recognizes Mary as the Queen of Heaven and Earth. Since medieval times, there has been a correlation between Mary and the month of May. May is considered the season of the beginning of new life. “May Crowning” marks a new spiritual season. Our Mary, Queen of heaven and earth, lifted us right out of the last long, cold days of winter and firmly planted our hearts in the warm and promising soil of spring.

We will hold our own May Crowning on May 3, 2024, at 2:00 pm, in Church. Students may bring a flower to school to place in a vase in their classroom. (You may pick it from your garden or purchase one to bring) Each classroom will have a vase of flowers. The vases will be placed around Mary. We will start with a procession of one student from each class carrying vases and praying together, and a wreath of flowers will be placed on the statue of Mary. (The act of crowning is rooted in the view of Mary as the Queen of Heaven.) Events like this remind us to be grateful for the gift of one another, as well as the gift of faith we are able to share at St. Peter Catholic School.

A direct and compelling headline

Sophie Morasch was chosen from among her 5th Grade Class as the Optimist Club Award recipient for the 2023-2024 school year. She was selected by her teachers for the many reasons listed below:

Sophie is a kind person with a willingness to help and encourage others. She is inquisitive and proactive in her pursuit of knowledge. Sophie always has a good attitude and mindset when starting new projects, and even when things don't work out she is persistent in doing the best job she can. She always has a nice word to say about her classmates and looks for the positive moments in her school day. She brings kindness and compassion to our school through her daily actions. Sophie is a kind student with great ambitions. She has a big heart when it comes to her friends and classmates. She is always willing to step in and help, even when she hasn't been asked to do so. She works hard to achieve all her goals and make good grades. Sophie is involved with volleyball outside of school. Her love for volleyball and her team is very apparent as she has shown in and out of the classroom.

Meet Our Staff

My name is Paula Wekenborg and I am the Director of the Vogelweid Learning Center. I am a graduate of St. Peter, Helias, and Lincoln University. This is my 28th year here at St. Peter. I live in Taos with my husband, Tom, and we are members of St. Francis Xavier Parish. We have 3 grown children and 3 grandkids. Connor is 16, Bridger is 6, and Ollie is 3. I love watching all sports but I am a St. Louis Cardinal fanatic (just ask anyone at school). I am a big DIYer and always have a project to keep me busy. St. Peter is an awesome school with terrific students, teachers, and staff. I feel blessed for each year I have been at this school and the many friendships I have made.
