Getting Unstuck...from Neutral

Acts 1:6-11

From Grief.png

The time always arrives when you must say goodbye.

We say it casually when we close a conversation. We have gestures we exchange to signal closure and farewell (the wave). And then there are the more severe separations of life; divorce, and death. Permanent. Neverending. Apparently never to return.

Our scripture reading is part of the gospel of John called "The Farewell Discourse." Like great heroes, Jesus is sharing a final speech, encouraging his loyal followers (including Judas Iscariot at this point) to continue on, listening for his instructions, and his companion to be sent (the Holy Spirit). Jesus is leaving, but we are not alone. The world will no longer see, but his followers we see, as they recall his words and teaching.

In our grief, we often forget God's never-ending presence with us. We have a companion even when Jesus appears to be absent, the Holy Spirit. To recall and reclaim the assurances of Jesus helps us confront our grief and loss.

Attend Worship: Pastor Jason has encouraged an "A grade" of 90% worship attendance (missing less the 5 Sundays in a year). You can keep up your attendance by joining worship online through our Facebook premiere or our worship online page on the website. Join us in person or online... it will count!

Wednesday Night Study

The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry

In-Person/Online

Continues

Wednesday, May 25, 7 pm

Next Wednesday, May 25, at 7 pm, we will discuss Simplicity

What was the last “fun” purchase you made? Did it make you feel complete? Why or why not?

Things are not evil, but our society is designed to value accumulation. We feel we need more or at least need the newer, bigger, and better version of what we have. Whether it’s the next phone upgrade, the newest pair of shoes, or even vying for more followers on social media, our drive for accumulation seems ever-present. The things we chase may not be bad, but when our desires go unchecked, our hearts will be consumed by the hunt for “more.”

In session four, John Mark will show us a better way forward: imitating Jesus’s lifestyle of simplicity leads us to live a lifestyle of contentment.

Prairie Avenue Provides Access to RightNowMedia
On Easter Sunday, Pastor Jason announced Prairie Avenue Christian Church would offer unlimited access to RightNow Media--the world's largest streaming library of video Bible study resources (it's been called the Netflix of video Bible studies).

Besides video-based Bible studies, RightNow Media offers videos for everyone in your family on a variety of topics like marriage, parenting, personal finances, mental health, and more. There is even a library just for kids with over 2,000 safe, entertaining videos (Including VeggieTales!). RightNow Media also has a free app that is available on all major streaming devices so you and your family can access content anywhere, anytime, by phone, computer, or SmartTV.

Enjoy a devotional while waiting for an appointment. Learn about the power of prayer, or explore something about faith or the Bible that has perplexed you for years.

2022 Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Pentecost Special Day Offering

Turning Struggle into Steadfastness -

2022 Pentecost Special Offering

Stories of struggle are nothing new to the church.

From the persecution faced by early Christians to civil rights movements led by faith leaders, the church has found its strength in times of unrest.

The COVID-19 pandemic is yet another chapter in this long history, both nothing unique and yet entirely different.

Through it all, Disciples have been steadfast. By launching emerging congregations, they have stepped up to care for communities in need.

But they don’t do it alone.

With the help of regional and general ministries, these brave leaders have been provided with facilities to conduct their outreach activities and with online educational opportunities, such as Leadership Academy.

By making a gift to the 2022 Pentecost Offering, received in most congregations on Sundays, May 29 and June 5, you can ensure that the new church movement continues to prosper in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

Each year, half of these gifts go to your own region to support local new church development. The other half goes to New Church Ministry, which trains, equips, assists, and multiplies new church leaders across the United States and Canada through programs such as coaching, New Church Hacks, and Water the Plants.

Planning, nurturing, and sustaining new places of worship is part of the Disciples’ vision – participation in this Special Day Offering helps this vision come to life.

New Homes and New Hope

In the fall of 2021, as the government of Afghanistan collapsed and families were rapidly evacuated, Week of Compassion reaffirmed refugee response as an ongoing priority and employed increased resources, including the Afghan Welcome congregational grants, to support local churches.

Does Your Bank/Financial Institution

Provide Bill Pay Services?

If so, you can make sure your tithe/gift/offering arrives whether you are able to attend or not! Often when someone is absent, their offering is also. Or you left it on the table while coming to church! You can set up Prairie Avenue Christian Church as a "bill" (we are not, of course) and schedule timely checks to be mailed at no cost to our address. Many members have taken advantage of our online giving portal, but it also charges fees each time! Avoid the service charges and fees by setting us up as a regular payment through your bank/financial institution. Without fail, your support will arrive. Set your "payment" plan today.

Dear Disciples: Grief and the Wisdom of Howard Thurman

Dear Disciples:

Grief and the Wisdom of Howard Thurman

In this message from General Minister and President Rev. Terri Hord Owens, she reflects on the staggering loss of 1 million US lives and forty thousand Canadian lives to Covid-19. Reflecting on the mystic and theologian Howard Thurman's poem A Time for Sorrow, Rev. Hord Owens shares "You may have lost loved ones—grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, colleagues, parishioners, clergy. So much loss. It has touched us all and changed our world forever and so we lament. We pour out our grief and we turn to the one who is the God of all comfort."
