Spring & Summer bring the dreaded

"Tick Season"

  • Lyme and Babesiosis are the 2 most common tick illnesses in Maine, but there are several others. MOST illnesses require the tick to be attached for 24 hours or longer but some can happen quicker which is why it is so important to prevent tick bites!

  • Maine has deer ticks (primary spreader of Lyme, Anaplasmosis, Babesiosis, Borrelia and Powassan)
  • Maine has dog ticks (currently no known diseases spread in ME)
  • Maine has woodchuck ticks (can spread Powassan)

PREVENTING TICK BITES

  • WALK IN THE CENTER of trails when hiking, avoid tall grassy and green areas.
  • USE a DEET-BASED REPELANT on all exposed areas of skin.
  • WEAR CLOSED-TOE SHOES and TUCK your PANTS into your shoes.
  • WEAR LIGHT COLORED CLOTHES (easier to see ticks).
  • SHOWER after spending time outside and do a FULL BODY CHECK (use a mirror to see body parts not in sight)

Visit the CDC for more information on ticks as well as more information on how to safely remove a tick.

Frequently Asked Questions...

  • Why would I pay for a membership if I already have insurance?
  • Direct primary care will provide you with quicker access to your personal physician. In the insurance based model of care, providers are forced to see more patients in shorter visits and follow insurance restrictions. Direct primary care patients also have access to dramatically reduced prescription medications and lab charges. Many patients save money after joining a DPC.
  • What about my regular insurance?
  • Billing insurance takes a lot of time and money, we do not bill insurances so that we can spend more time with our patients. We do encourage all patients to carry insurance for catastrophic coverage in case of an emergency but insurance is NOT required to be a member. You can still use your regular insurance for testing, medications and specialists but with DPC you have a choice to use DPC medications and labs as they are often cheaper than your insurance.
