 Happy Dog
On the road now, heading to my annual collaboration at Happy Dog Ranch in Littleton, Colorado with Mark Rashid and Dr. Steve Peters.  | | | | The Peters-Masterson-Rashid Gang | | | | The Masterson-Peters-Rashid Gang Unmasked!
 Vermillion
Flying these days can be frustrating (packed planes, delays, packed planes and delays), and I like the drive across the plains from southeast Iowa to Colorado – gives me time to sit and think – or not – so I’m sitting in a hotel here now in Vermillion, South Dakota taking time to get this newsletter to you. | | | | When I say I like the drive across the plains, the part of the plains I like best are farther west than the Midwest, with few farms and more open land. If you google a satellite map and draw an imaginary line down through the middle of North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma, you’ll see where the dark green of the Midwest starts to fade into the light brown of the west. That’s the part of the drive I like – the imaginary part.  | | | | And if you’re looking closely and see where Vermillion, South Dakota is, you might say, “Wait a gol-dang minute! Vermillion, South Dakota is nowhere near the drive between southeast Iowa and Colorado. What kind of dad-burned crazy yahoo sod-buster would go that far north to go west?” | | | | Well, the reason is, I’m looking to buy an old pickup truck to buy to drive around town when I’m home. I have a really nice, clean, modern Dodge Ram that’s efficient and comfortable for traveling (isn’t packed and no delays), but it’s a little too nice and comfortable and I’d like something a little more… uh, rustic to drive around town.  | | | | ⬆️ Old truck - New truck! ⬇️ | | | | I’m taking a detour up here to South Dakota on the way to Denver to look at one (which I didn’t get) and it’s given me a chance to drive across the sand hills of northern Nebraska on the way to Littleton. The light brown up here looks a little different than the usual light brown across southern Nebraska and northern Kansas, which is a nice change.
I got to wondering about the town of Vermillion so I Wikipedia-ed it and found that the Lakota Sioux name for the Vermillion River is wa sa wak pa'la (red stream), and the Lakota word waséoyuze, means “place where vermillion is obtained”. That made sense except I also got to wondering, how is vermillion obtained?
Well, it was an easy wiki-click from the town of Vermillion to vermillion which, according to Wikipedia, is the red-orange pigment taken from a mineral called mercury-sulfide (cinnabar) which, according to the Sioux, was found in this area.
The word vermillion, by-the-way, originated from the latin word for a type of worm (vermis) because of an insect from which a similar color pigment used to be taken.  If you’d like to keep going you can start with the town of Vermillion South Dakota on Wikipedia and continue clicking. You will find out, for example, that among other things, Lewis and Clark camped and saw their first buffalo here on August 24, 1804.
 OK, I’ll stop here.

We’re getting a lot more Weekend Seminar, Light to the Core, and EAL Masterson Method Equine Specialist (MMES) courses scheduled all over the U.S. and the world that aren’t yet up on the Calendar, including another Light to the Core Seminar coming up in the UK before winter sets in, a Weekend Seminar in Hungary (our first!) with Diane Howard, and also our first MMES in the UK next February. So, if you’re interested in any of these, keep checking the Course Calendar on our website, or below (Course Listings).
You can never have too much, or too much knowledge. | | | | HorseClass
I’m kinda a picky guy when it comes to collaborating with other clinicians, but Callie Rae King, founder of HorseClass, is one I can get behind. Last year, she invited me to teach the Weekend Seminar at her place in Honey Brook, Pennsylvania, and she had her film crew out to take footage for a future online class. Well, lucky for you, that online class through HorseClass, Gentle Bodywork with Jim Masterson, is NOW OPEN!
You have just a few days left to enroll (enrollment closes July 18) in this class where you’ll learn from both Callie and me some of the gentler techniques (6 of them actually) that anyone can learn to do with their horse. Callie is incredibly thorough and offers a framework with supportive videos and activity worksheets for each of the 10 lesson plans to help you put this work into practice.
AND… the even cooler thing is that when you enroll, you get a bonus of accessing the LIVESTREAM event when I return to her farm this September to teach the Weekend Seminar again! It’s our first time doing a LIVESTREAM event! Thank goodness I’m not in charge of the tech! But I will be in front of the camera and look forward to seeing you there! | | | | I’m going to wrap it up now so I can get out on the road in the morning and be in Denver in time to make the Big Show at Happy Dog on Tuesday. Again, if you’re in the area, come on over!
 Until then like me,
 Enjoy your horses!

Don’t miss this new opportunity to learn The Masterson Method® with the Master himself! | | | | MMCP Ali Brown's recent Demo | | | | I just wanted to say thanks again to the MES office staff and Vicky Devlin for supporting my fundraiser and MM demo at Sandy Lane Equestrian Centre – it was last night (July 6) and it went really well!
The raffle of the Masterson Book and LTC coupons helped raise £235 (local shops gave books, chocolates and make-up/beauty sets). Adding this to other donations, I now have a grand total of £830 to spend on specialized equipment to enhance the therapeutic riding lessons that are offered by the centre.  | | | |
The evening started with a short demo of what a typical therapeutic riding lesson entails, and our rider Emily, who is 11 years old and has Downs syndrome, was an absolute star, as was her pony Blodwyn :) This was followed by the MM demo, which involved three horses (a cob, a thoroughbred and a Norwegian Fjord called Peter) to show that MM works with all sorts of horses and ponies. I’ve attached a photo of me with Peter (below) – looking suitably relaxed! (He got the memo…)! Best wishes, Ali

Three veterans participated in the recent Masterson Method Weekend Seminar held at Lincourt Stables at The Paddock Riding Club in Burbank, California. The veterans came to the course through a non-profit organization, EET, which provides equine experiences and job skills training in equine related fields. The Masterson Method® is an essential part of the veterans programs that EET offers, as MM provides insight into understanding the horse that rapidly advances veterans learning horse handling skills. | | | | Thomas, Robert and Samuel met EET on an Introduction to Horse Communication day, a workshop that introduces veterans to EET programs. In this introductory equine experience, veterans are taught to halter and lead a horse, basic grooming and begin to experience how horses sense their world and move through it. Masterson Method techniques like the Bladder Meridian Technique are used in helping veterans establish a connection to the horse and learn to observe and follow the responses of the horse. The Bladder Meridian Technique immediately impresses participants with how much of an effect gentle contact has when working around horses. EET feels that it helps dispel misconceptions people may have about horses, reduces fears that may arise and creates a safe and calm working environment for the participants.  | | | | As veterans learn horse handling skills, MM techniques are used to reinforce safe and gentle handling. When teaching how to pick the hoof, EET adds in the Scapula Release to let the horse and veteran feel what a relaxed range of motion is like. Before saddling, the Withers Wiggle is demonstrated and practiced, to illustrate how the saddle interacts with the anatomy. EET feels that Masterson techniques ease veterans into a more relaxed state as well as the horse. | | | | | | | | Since their introduction to horses and MM, Thomas, Robert and Samuel have been volunteering at EET’s partner ranch, furthering their horse handling skills to prepare them for the Weekend Seminar and beyond. Robert is a life long educator, Thomas is completing nursing school and Samuel has applied to be a game warden for Camp Pendleton (which includes patrols of wild lands on horseback - where do I sign up for that job?) and will go to farrier school. Sam wants to incorporate Masterson Method skills into his trimming and shoeing practice, recognizing the value of working with a relaxed horse. Thomas is dedicated to his nursing career, and finds helping out at the ranch to be his peaceful time to unwind from his studies and work. Dr. Robert shared that being around horses and using Masterson Method techniques allows him to extend his lifetime commitment to being of service to others and to horses. Robert says the benefits of this exchange have opened his eyes and his heart to an entirely new way of being of service.
Will Friday, MMCP | | | | Masterson Method Equine Specialist (MMES) Program News | | | | Welcome to our New MMES Practitioners | | | | Renée Rivard, MMCP, MMESColorado Springs, Colorado
Renée has been passionate about the health and well-being of humans and animals alike since 1987 with a strong interest in natural modalities. Her love for horses was sparked at a very early age when, as a toddler, her father would hold her on the back of his horse and walk her around. She maintained her connection with horses during her teenage and young adult years via periodic trail rides in Florida and even a 5-day round-up in Nebraska.
Her passion for animal well-being is reflected by her decades of volunteer service as a wildlife rescuer, rehabilitator, educator, and conservationist where she has contributed to wildlife and environmental conservation work in Australia, The Republic of Panama, and the US. Her more recent volunteer work with equine therapeutic riding and equine rescue / rehabilitation stables in Colorado Springs rekindled a connection among her love of horses and her passion for health and natural healing... | | | | Diane Besson, MMES Hales Corners, Wisconsin
I’m originally from the suburbs of Detroit, and I have now lived most of my life in here in Wisconsin. I’ve loved horses all my life but I rarely got to interact with any horse through the years except for the occasional trail ride or going to the state fair. I have always wanted to work at a barn and learn anything and everything I could about horses. I was fortunate enough to retire in 2017.

In the Spring of 2018 a Welsh pony named Victor crossed my path. Victor was in horrible shape. I ended up rescuing him that July and brought him to Jericho Creek farms II which also houses the therapeutic riding program named Horse Power Healing Center (HPHC). They say the horse finds you. I believe Victor came into my life to bring me to the world of horses.
That September a fellow friend (who has 3 horses) asked if I would like to go to an introductory Masterson Method Weekend Seminar in Ohio. I did and I was hooked! I then decided I wanted to focus on helping horses in equine-assisted services programs like HPHC and enrolled in the Masterson Method Equine Specialist Program. I had 9 wonderful months with Victor until he succumbed to the years of neglect and starvation. I had practiced what I had learned on Victor and the other therapy horses at the barn.
I am looking forward to partnering with HPHC and other equine-assisted services programs, if called, to share how we can give back to the horse with the Bladder Meridian technique and help them release tension while helping people at the same time. Ultimately, I love working with the horses helping them recognize their tension points and watching the releases. I feel so privileged and honored to work with these amazing creatures we call horses. My life is forever changed for the best:)
I live in Hales Corners, WI with my husband Dan our dog Gunnie and our cat Loki. My Chauncey (Morgan) and my husbands Mick (Arabian) live in Eagle, WI.

The Masterson Method continues to reach horses and humans around the globe.
Masterson instructor and MMCP Lucie Klaassen is bringing the Masterson Method to Denmark! Last month, she went to Denmark for the 2nd time to do a weekend seminar.
The first time was in 2018. Mille, who hosted the weekend seminar back then, now was a brilliant assistant! Maja Caspersen was the perfect host and she invited us to her beautiful and peaceful location in the midst of nature. The outdoor classroom in her garden was the perfect setting for teaching a Masterson weekend!

Brooke USA Launches National Fundraising Campaign to Help Distressed Donkeys Worldwide
We at Brooke USA are excited to announce a year-long campaign named “The Donkey Project," which seeks to raise an ambitious $1.5 million by June 30, 2024. Coupled with Brooke USA’s strategic plan, “The Donkey Project” is intended to grow the organization’s depth of work while raising more funds in support of working donkeys and the people who depend on them for survival in vulnerable communities worldwide.
Without healthy working donkeys, people would not be able to put food on their tables, send their children to school or build better futures for themselves and their families. In summation, donkeys are essential to the livelihoods of people in developing countries.
The campaign’s focal point is a bold appeal to donors and friends for support of 100,000 donkeys at $15 a year each. “Donors can directly affect the lives of one, 10 or 100 donkeys, it is completely up to them. Donors will be able to monitor our progress online as we add more and more donkeys to ‘The Donkey Project’,” said Kendall Bierer, Donor Relations Officer of Brooke USA.

Félicie discovered horse riding during a school trip at the age of 9 and this is how her passion for horses, ponies and donkeys was born. She studied in equine production and is a show jumping rider. After a break of ten years, she returns to the equestrian world and competition.
She realizes that she misses horses on a daily basis. She discovers through another MMCP the Masterson Method® and registers for a half-day of discovery, buys Jim’s book, “Beyond Horse Massage”, and practices some techniques on his mare. This is the revelation! The changes in behavior and performance left no doubt in Félicie’s head, who decided to fly to England for a 2-day seminar and then certification 18 months later.
The more she advances in her practice, the more she realizes the ability of the horse to relax in gentleness and benevolence. That he can be the main actor of his well-being and this without any constraint. | | Phone: +33 0664876850 Email: felicie.moinet@hotmail.fr

For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a deep love of horses. Every year, my parents would take me to the local agricultural fair and give me a pony ride. It was the time of year I looked forward to most. It was my only real contact with horses. Otherwise, they occupied my imagination in all my games. It wasn’t until late in my adult life that I decided to explore contact with horses again. I started with one lesson a week, then two lessons a week. Then I shared the board of a horse from my riding school, before finally adopting my own horse. I quickly became overwhelmed by this magnificent passion for horses. I wanted to be part of their world. Horses have given me so much in my life that I wanted to do something good for them too.
I stumbled across a podcast on the Masterson Method®. It immediately piqued my curiosity. I ordered the book and, to my astonishment, discovered that there was a weekend seminar in my area. I signed up immediately and the adventure continued until my certification in May 2023.
I sincerely believe that this is the path I had to take; to wait for this maturity to really be able to have this privileged contact with horses. When I do a Masterson session on a horse, time no longer matters. It’s just him and me, and that’s when I really feel I can help him feel better in his body, make a difference for him. I feel grateful and privileged to be able to experience these moments every time. | | Phone: 438-823-6879 Email: bodyworkequin@outlook.com
 | | | | | | | | Louise Brown, MMCP Wilmslow, Cheshire , UK
My equine experience spans across 40 years; from my first pony and untouched Shetland to my current three, one of whom I have bred.
Throughout these years I have gained valuable experience and knowledge working on a variety of yards of different disciplines, including stud work and handling showjumping and endurance stallions.
I spent 12 years managing a local equestrian shop, where I gained a thorough knowledge of nutrition, feeding, supplements, worming and tack.
Biomechanics and rehabilitation is my passion, whether for a competition horse or family pony; I am always observing how the horse moves and how this impacts patterns of movement or behaviour. I analyze everything and want to know how I can improve these things. The Masterson Method® complements this and has added a new dimension to my work.
Like most horse owners I have had my fair share of rehabbing, both my own and clients’ horses, but I always felt there was something else I could be doing to help the horses alongside the rehabilitation plan and groundwork exercises; this is how I came to certify in the Masterson Method®.
Participating in the weekend seminar, I was lucky enough to have one of my own horses to work on, who at the time was in a rehab program. Being a stoic horse, he had been going through the rehab without complaining, but whilst working alongside his parasympathetic nervous system, it gave me a greater understanding of what areas he was still holding tension in. I went home and tried the techniques on my other horse and was just blown away by his reactions; the change in him not only physically but emotionally have been staggering! His is a very long, complex story, but it’s thanks to both of my boys that I completed the course work and practical training, and became a Masterson Method Certified Practitioner (MMCP).
I cover Cheshire/ North west and also make regular trips to Anglesey. I am happy to travel further by arrangement. | | | | | | Sarah Butcher, MMCP Plymouth, Devon , UK
Sarah has always had a passion for horses, being involved with them for the majority of her life and previously enjoying competing in a variety of disciplines including British Dressage.
Sarah initially pursued a pathway of studying Biology, partly due to her interest in anatomy but also to explore the wider aspects of living organisms, resulting in the development of a comprehensive understanding of biological systems. Following this, and after spending time completing scientific research through a PhD, she shared her knowledge through teaching Biology. Sarah later combined her equine experience with her teaching and research experience, lecturing on Equine and Animal based Foundation and Bachelor of Science Degree courses and Masters Level in Equitation Science. She lectured on a range of equitation related topics; one of her key areas of focus being equine behaviour and how horses learn, and another focusing on ethical and sustainable equitation, incorporating the importance of considering the horse as a sentient being to ensure a positive effect on equine welfare.
Sarah has a particular interest in applying aspects of learning and behaviour with equine learning for welfare-based performance success, both ridden and handling. She is focused on ‘horse needs’ led training, and is always striving to consider the subtle signals that horses exhibit, and incorporating these when working with them. She feels that observing, listening and responding to these signals contributes to a positive horse-human relationship; a vital aspect to consider when working with horses.
Sarah enjoys how the Masterson Method® technique enables her to work with the horse, taking their responses into account during bodywork sessions. She feels that it is a privilege to be able to work with horses; always striving to listen to them, and enjoying how each horse is an individual and taking this into account during the bodywork.
Sarah is based in Devon but she is also able to work with horses in Cornwall due to being near the Cornwall-Devon border. | | | | | Interested in taking a course? Here are a few testimonials that might convince you!
I would definitely recommend this course. The entire experience was amazing. It is very satisfying to see the transformation of a nervous horse relax and literally melt after the techniques. (Weekend Seminar)
Very thorough job of sharpening the techniques of the weekend course and adding a whole new toolbox of techniques. (Advanced 5-Day Course)
Anyone who interacts with horses will benefit from learning these techniques. Anyone can learn them. Every horse deserves to feel better. The training and support were very helpful to get hands-on experience and feedback. (Light to the Core Seminar)
