April 2024 Equine Newsletter

Hello All,
Sitting in our wonderful (-ly small) Cedar Rapids, Iowa Airport on my way to Barcelona, Spain. Once there I’ll be:
1) teaching a Beyond Horse Massage Weekend Seminar, and
2) hopping over to the UK for a Masterson Method Certified Practitioner Gathering.
These Gatherings are continuing educational conferences for our Practitioners, but are also an opportunity for us to eat, drink, network, connect and reconnect with each other. We just had one of these in January in Cave Creek, Arizona, and it was the usual blast (fun term from the 50’s, 60’s, AND 70’s). Quite a few MMCPs came from Europe, but once I get on this plane I’ll be on my way to enjoy some time with the rest of our peeps out there.
Euro-hopping came to a halt for me during covid, but the barn door’s open now and I’m taking advantage. They say the grass is always greener on the other side of the pond. The spring grass is just getting greener here at home but in the meantime I’m all for multi-national grazing.
While it’s hard to find much good to say about the whole covid thing, one good thing that came out of it was that being at home more – both during and after – gave people the opportunity to spend more time with their horses. Slowing down in general gave them time to find and follow the blink, blink, blink - and then wait, wait…. and wait…. for the horse to give them that satisfying and sometimes surprising yawn, lick, chew or stretch.

Worth waiting for!
Continuing education can mean (I’m into the outline format this month):
1) continuing to find new ways to make a connection with the horse, and
2) continuing to get better and better at what you’re doing once you’ve made the connection.
One reason I’ve been venturing out lately to teach the Beyond Horse Massage Weekend Course is:
1) I miss doing it, and
2) to get new video content to update our Beyond Horse Massage Home Study Course.
The Beyond Horse Massage Home Study Course is taken from the Beyond Horse Massage Weekend Course, with actual video instruction and Q and A’s from students on the Course, as well as guided practice of Techniques taken from the Beyond Horse Massage book.
This Course is for people who (here we go):
1) can’t make it to an in-person Beyond Horse Massage Weekend Course, or
2) have done an in-person Weekend Course, but would like to get better and better at it.
Whether you’ve already done the Home Study Course or have yet to sign up for it, once you do you’ll have access to all of the updated material as soon as it’s put up.

|
Well, I hear them calling for steerage passengers so I better get going. Next month I’ll let you know how the Barcelona Weekend Course and the UK MMCP Gathering went.
Until then,
1) like me,
2) Enjoy your Horses!
3) Jim

We're All About Continued Learning!
Yup, this month we are focusing on continued learning. You may not have noticed the Resources Tab on the main website, but there are lots of interesting items to support your growth and connection with 4-legged friends. Past Newsletter links, Podcasts, the Bodywork Blog and Free Educational Videos are readily available on your phone, tablet or computer!
Beyond Horse Massage Book
Have you ever watched Masterson Method videos and wondered "could I do that?"
This book allows you to dive in, absorb the knowledge, and deepen the relationship with your horse!
Already have the book? If the binding isn't broken yet, crack it open again and see what you can uncover and/or discover with another reading. It's also a great chance to laugh at Jim's sense of humor!
The BHM Book has also been translated into other languages - check them out here:
Beyond Horse Massage Book in Other Languages
(Just so ya know, Grady - a 30-year old QH knows every horse can learn a new trick. He prefers Chapter 9: Performance Issues!)
No horses, people or books were injured taking the above photo!

Masterson Method Bodywork Blog
Sometimes our biggest learnings come out of a particularly challenging time or situation.
In the latest blog post, one of our canine course students talks about the loss of her beloved dog, and how the Masterson Method helped her learn to connect with her new dog. It’s something many of us as animal-lovers will understand.
The Bodywork Blog includes Techniques, Tips and Topics from real-life stories - people telling their experiences of connecting with their animals through the Masterson Method.

Neva Rae Powers, MMCP
Wellington, Florida
Neva was born and raised in Indiana and now makes Wellington, Florida, one of the horse capitals of the world, her home. Introduced to the Masterson Method® by the founder of Vinceremos Therapeutic Riding Center, Neva attended the 2 day course and was hooked.
During her studies she was lucky enough to have horses from every discipline and level of accomplishment on which to work.

Szonja Oroszlán, MMCP
Budapest, Hungary
Interestingly I’m not one of those riders that started early on. In the summer of 2010 I was going to meet a friend, but she decided to go on a trail ride so I accompanied her to the barn. When we walked in I instantly locked eyes with the most beautiful creature I’ve ever seen, my future horse Daniel. He said hello and had me in a bind.

Solveig Pedersen, MMCP
Clayton, Washington
Solveig has been around horses her entire life. Her mother raised Arabians in the 70’s and 80’s and the whole family rode together on the trails. When she took over her mom’s farm in 2001, Solveig switched gears from hot-bloods to cold and started a Norwegian Fjord breeding program. She spent her year raising kids, training, riding, exploring various disciplines, and eventually teaching. The more horses and people she encountered the more she wanted to help horses and riders/drivers/owners have better relationships...

Kloei Lindsay, MMCP, MMES
Cambridge, Idaho
I was born in Nevada and blessed to be part of a beautiful family full of big hearts with parents who taught us to follow our own dreams. Nevada may seem barren and lifeless to outsiders, as it is known for Highway 50, the loneliest road in America. To me, however, it is full of unlimited adventure and life! It was in these deserts and mountains where I grew up playing with my horses and the place I could let my spirit roam free.

Newly Certified Equine Specialists
|
Our Certified Equine Specialists have worked through an abbreviated certification program designed to be accessible and relevant for equine-assisted services (EAS) professionals and volunteers. The MMES can volunteer to offer simple bodywork to EAS horses and/or partner with their EAS program to co-facilitate a new equine-assisted learning activity, such as the Bladder Meridian Technique, as a means for participants to “give back to the horse” while also creating connection.

Pamela Loughran, MMES
Chester, New York
I have volunteered at Winslow Therapeutic Riding Center for almost 20 years now and was a participant at a Masterson Method® clinic there quite a few years ago. I LOVED it and wanted to learn more, although my life as a stay at home mom was quite busy and I just couldn’t fit it in....
Fast forward….My kids are successfully moving into their adult lives & I now have the opportunity to pursue some of my dreams...

Kimberly Severance, MMES
Westbrook, Connecticut
Since she was little, Kim has had a great love for all animals, especially horses. She began riding at 5 years old and was soon competing in hunt seat equitation on the flat and over fences. These foundational experiences created a deep compassion and love for horses as sentient beings.
Her professional career began as a Recreational Therapist in 2006. Since then, Kim has been incorporating animals into her therapy sessions...
