South African Contemporary with

Lihle Mfene


Lihle has performed & studied extensively with several professional dance companies throughout South Africa. He recently graduated from the Cape Academy of Performing Arts in South Africa, where he studied dance, drama, and physical theater. Lihle's international experience includes two summers at the Bates Dance Festival and workshops in Germany and the Walnut Hill School in MA. Lihle will combine traditional South African dances with contemporary movement for a unique class experience!

Hip Hop with John "Comix" Barrella


John “Comix” Barrella is a Street Dance choreographer, performer, & educator based in New Jersey. His work as a choreographer and artist has been featured in a wide range of events, including Tedx: Chaos, NYC Breakers Presents: Battle of the Boroughs, Halftime shows for the NY Knicks, music videos such as Alissia’s “Get Away”, Tenin’s “HSKT” and much more. John is hired internationally for conventions, events, programs, and institutions to present work in Street Dance that is both authentic and educational to maintain the quality of Hip Hop and related genres. When he isn’t touring the country, John is busy producing new works as a director and producer of Street Dance-based productions and the satire show “Stupid Humans.” https://www.johncomix.com/

Contemporary Forms with Heidi Weiss


Heidi Weiss is a Berlin-based artist originally from the USA. An experienced dance educator and choreographer, she teaches a dynamic and defined flow of contemporary dance with its roots in modern dance. Weissmann technique was developed through her many years of teaching and choreographing with Jennifer Mann. This technique not only enhances your technical abilities by investigating your physical limitations... but also celebrates the pure joy of moving!

Contemporary Forms with Melecio Estrella, Artistic Director of Bandaloop


Melecio Estrella (he/him) is a director, dance artist, and educator based in Oakland, CA. Committed to advancing equity, access, and environmental and social justice, Melecio believes dance- and art-making play a vital role in the health of individuals, communities, and societies.

Melecio has been dancing with BANDALOOP since 2003. In 2011 he became the company’s Education Director and in 2015, the Associate Artistic Director. His recent work includes Tidal Constellations (2019) performed at the National Art Gallery of Malaysia for international arts and culture dignitaries at the Summit of Arts Councils and Cultural Agencies (IFACCA) and FLOOD (2020) at the opening of the Momentary in Bentonville, AR. The same year in 2020, he was appointed by founding Artistic Director Amelia Rudolph to succeed her as the new Artistic Director. His BANDALOOP artistic milestones include making dances on the cliffs of Tienmen Mountain in the Hunan province of China; Art and About in Sydney, Australia; The Africa Cup in Libreville, Gabon; The Barents Spektacle in Kirkenes, Norway; and the JFK Centennial at The Kennedy Center, Washington, DC.

In addition to his work with BANDALOOP, he co-directs the dance theater company Fog Beast and is a longtime member of the Joe Goode Performance Group. His choreographies have been commissioned by Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the San Francisco Opera Center, Dancers’ Group, Headlands Center for the Arts and numerous universities around the US. He is a 2018-2019 recipient of the Gerbode Special Award in the Arts, and a 2017/18 Leadership Fellow with the Association for Performing Arts Professionals (APAP).

Portland Youth Dance (PYD) is the resident youth company at Casco Bay Movers, offering pre-professional dance training to dedicated dancers ages 10-18 years. PYD has three main tracks; Company which focuses on modern, jazz, and contemporary forms; Crew, which focuses on hip hop forms and PYD 2, a training company geared toward dancers 10-13 years. PYD was founded in 1998 as an alternative to competitive dance and is a 501(c)(3) organization run by a volunteer Board of Directors. PYD’s robust community class program provides access to free dance classes.
