THANKSGIVING DAY HOLIDAY The parish office will be closed on Thursday and Friday, November 25 and 26, in observance of the national holiday. On Thanksgiving Day, the Cathedral Kitchen will serve a traditional Thanksgiving meal from 3:30pm-4:30pm. The Cathedral Kitchen will also be open on Friday, serving at the usual time of 4:00pm-4:30pm. Happy Thanksgiving!

ADVENT GIVING TREE AND SOCK DRIVE Stop by the Mary shrine to pick a tag off our annual Giving Tree, or visit the Cathedral website for the virtual Giving Tree. Each tag contains a gift wish from someone in need in our community. Our Annual “Warm Hearts and Soles” Advent Sock Drive is also underway! Our Goal: 2,022 pairs of socks for homeless men. Both giving programs are easy and fun to participate: simply shop for the item and return it after Sunday Mass in the Cathedral Chapel or have it shipped to the Parish Office by Sunday, December 12. ST VINCENT DE PAUL RECENTLY VISITED a young man who is the proud father of a 3-year-old son who lives with him part time. When we visited over the telephone the man had just ended a month-long job and was seeking work. Because the man finds work through a temporary agency and changes jobs frequently, he does not qualify for unemployment. With the lapse in his income, he fell two months behind in paying rent. The young man called the SVdP Helpline requesting assistance (206-767-6449). With your support we were able to pay a portion of his rent. CATHEDRAL BOOKSTORE Open weekdays 11am-3pm and after each of the weekend Masses Stop by the Cathedral Bookstore for gifts including medals and rosaries, children’s books, and hundreds of books on spirituality, history, theology, and much more! In addition, there are great Cathedral souvenirs, including rosaries, notecards, postcards, snow globes, keyrings, as well as books exploring Cathedral art and history. ST MARTIN DE PORRES SANDWICH MINISTRY After being shuttered since the beginning of the pandemic, St. James Cathedral resumes the St. Martin de Porres Sandwich Ministry tomorrow Monday, November 22, providing sandwiches and other food items for homeless men. SPIRITUAL SUPPORT GROUP As we approach the holiday season, it is a good time to remember all those for whom depression, anxiety and other mental health challenges make this season particularly difficult. If you or a loved one would like to access mental health and spiritual support, consider attending NAMI’s Spiritual Support Group. The group is open to both individuals living with a mental illness and their family members. This group is facilitated by husband-wife team, Joe and Janie Stevens, who have personal experience with mental illness. This group has been ongoing at St. Brendan’s Parish in Bothell for many years and is now accessible online. The group gathers on the 2nd & 4th Wednesdays of the month, 7:00-8:30pm. CATHOLIC ADVOCACY UPDATE After thoughtful consideration, the Washington State Catholic Conference and our Catholic advocacy partners have decided to retire the Catholic Advocacy Day model, and we will no longer gather each year in February/March as an organized group at the Capitol in Olympia during the legislative session. In an effort to do the most good with limited resources, St. James and parishes all throughout Washington state will work to grow a year-round, statewide legislative and policy advocacy network. South Seattle Deanery parishes are developing a plan to work together to host sessions with our elected officials at the state, county and city level. FAITH FRIENDS OPEN HOUSE Do you know a child or teen age 7-18 with physical, cognitive and/or intellectual disabilities? Faith Friends begins in January 2022 and will be a unique blend of our Faith Mentor, children’s faith formation program, and an inclusion ministry. TEEN, YOUNG ADULT AND ADULT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR FAITH FRIENDS MINISTRY Perhaps the most unique aspect of the Faith Friends program is the Faith Peer program. Faith Peers are teens and young adults who have chosen to live out their discipleship and share some of their personal time in dedication and service to the goals of the program. OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES DURING THE PANDEMIC Catholic Community Services/Catholic Housing Services (CCS/CHS) continues to rely on the Cathedral to provide meals for their day centers and shelters. Unopened store-bought casseroles and unopened sandwich-ingredients (bread, deli meat, vegetables and condiments) are greatly appreciated. In addition, toiletries (toothpaste, toothbrushes, soaps and shampoos, feminine hygiene products), canned ready-to-eat meals (i.e. soup or chili), cup of noodles, easy mac & cheese, K-cup coffee, cocoa and tea, individual servings of chips, crackers, granola bars and cereals have been requested.
