Staying Motivated During the Summer

The summer is a great time to do lawn work, go on vacation, and generally relax. But did you know it's also a great time to put your job search in full gear?

Think about it: you have more time to look for work, there's less competition from other job seekers, and employers are hiring. Your motivation might not be the greatest it's been, so here are some ways to stay motivated.

Tips for the Summer Job Search

  • Develop a daily routine similar to the one you had while working. After all, looking for a job is work.
  • Get organized. Part of your daily job-search routine is scheduling times to update your resume/LinkedIn profile, search for jobs online, connect with people on LinkedIn and in person.
  • Find an accountability partner. They could be your spouse, a friend, someone in your networking group, a former colleague, a career advisor.
  • Speaking of networking, start networking. Currently, most networking groups are holding meetings online, but you can network in smaller groups or one-on-one.
  • Attend webinars. The nice thing about online webinars is that you can join them from any location.
  • Change things up. If what you've been doing isn't working, try other methods of looking for work. For example, if you're only applying online, reach out to recruiters or staffing agencies, and give networking a go.
  • Take a break every once in a while. Your breaks can be scheduled or whenever you feel the need to recharge. There's nothing wrong with taking the family to the beach when the weather is nice.
  • Practice affirmation. This has proven to be a confidence booster if done on a consistent basis. Say after us, "I am an asset to employers," "I have chosen the right career," "The past is the past."
  • Meet with a career advisor. Whether you want to talk with a career advisor about your resume, for interviewing tips, or just a friendly ear, they can be a great ally.

Skill Assessments

Job Seekers should anticipate that employers may "assess" their knowledge in certain subject areas prior to sending out an offer letter. These assessments allow the employer to realize a job seeker's baseline competency in a process, a tool, or a software package.

Skills assessments have developed greatly from the days of typing tests. Today's assessments cover skill requirements in almost every occupation from the most physical jobs to the most technical ones. No matter your profession, there is likely an assessment for that occupation.

At MassHire Lowell Career Center we currently have 70 assessments that our customers can access at any time. These assessments are free to use and can assist Job Seekers in discovering their competency in a subject area.

We currently offer assessments in many occupations or skills areas, including:

  • Accounting & Financial
  • Applications & Programming
  • Assembly & Production
  • Clerical & Office
  • Customer Service
  • Data Entry
  • Digital Skills
  • Medical Office
  • MS Office Suite
  • Networking & IT Support
  • Nursing
  • Trades
  • Warehousing
