MARY ROSE YOUNG NEWSLETTER September 2023
Bonjour Monsieur La Baguette
You’re blindfolded and left “somewhere is the world”…. then the blindfold is taken off and you have to guess where you are…. You see people walking along the street each carrying a long thin paper bag with the tip of a loaf sticking out and suddenly it’s easy! Oh la la. In the photo is a Mary Rose Baguette Tray. It isn’t the kind of piece you can buy anywhere like a mug or a bowl. Most of her other pieces are usually whimsical versions of very standard items. But if somebody ordered me to go and find a Baguette Tray I’m not sure where I’d start. So all the more reason to “Go Mary Rose” and adorn your sideboard with this gloriously eye-catching work of art
I am Blue because of You....
…Says the Table Lamp. And yes it’s blue rosebush because that was the design this customer adopted. She is Nancy from North Carolina and just on the right hand side of one of these photos you can also see one of her pendant lamps which are also Blue Rosebush. Nancy chose the design scrolling through our website and since she picked it Mary Rose too has been re-visiting the design more frequently. The gloriously vast expanse of tightly packed hand decorated roses finished off in gold will give those annoying guests, who you tire of talking to, something to look at during the awkward silence. “Beautiful Table Lamp” they’ll say and you’ll think “Go Away!”
Egg Cup with Boots
Mary Rose’s high heeled egg cups have made their creator so proud! They have wandered off the pages of a story book straight into so many homes that they may be her most numerous creation ever. Harvey Nichols’ interest has certainly made a much larger group of people aware of them than we alone could ever have engaged with. And so now we have this second candidate that’s wandered in, an exciting new companion egg cup. The style is the same but this one is dressed for a lot more walking than his more elegant sibling. The Bootsie Egg Cup
In The Wavy
We saw a Large Heart Vase in the new Wavy Stripe design in the last newsletter and since then Mary Rose has made a few more original examples. Ironically they are all colours that she would define as “pale” and yet it would be hard to find another piece of pottery anywhere more colourful than this so called “pastel” design. The large piece is a Large Flared Vase while behind it there’s a Candy Dish and in front a Fluted Posy Vase and a Rose Footed Dish
Transcendent Pendants
These new pendant lamps have a beautiful custom Rose Design that Mary Rose has put together to match a colour scheme that the customer already had on her tiles. The background colour is a “sea green” that she hasn’t used so much for a while, but it seems to lend itself charmingly to the bright red and pink roses as they shine out like a lighthouse in a storm. The underside of the lamps is all gold and the choice of the white fabric flex makes sure that there’s no colour challenge coming down from the ceiling.
Chicken Little
She was a bird who was hit on the head by a falling acorn and thought the sky was falling in. In her panicked frantic manner she convinces all the other animals to freak out too. I think Mary Rose’s chicken could almost be an illustration for this story…her chicken is prepossessed, fretful and feverish as it charges along. So much energy she manages to conjure up that “decoration” may not be quite the right word. I was also going to say how nice it is that at least one artist actually likes chickens, but I was astonished to find that in every "Top Ten Favourite Animals" I could find, the chicken comes at either 3 or 4, ahead of horses foxes wolves bears….I wouldn't have guessed they were quite that well loved
Six Geese A Laying
It's only September but Christmas is already in the air at the pottery. Here are two new styles of Small Christmas Tree, all seated on the table, that Mary Rose has shepherded out of the kiln. There's now a Candy Canes version and the gold edged stripes design that can be either Red/Orange or Pink/Lilac, there's even one more stripy colour scheme on our website. I'm so glad that Christmas happens, it's so nice to have something in common with everybody else for at least one day, and just like every year, I cannot wait!
