From River of Grass to Toxic Estuaries: How the legacy of Marjory Stoneman Douglas can inform today's fight for the Everglades and clean water in Florida
Tuesday, April 2 | 2pm–3:00pm
Robert Morgade Library
When Marjory Stoneman Douglas published the seminal book The Everglades: River of Grass in 1947, she broadened the world's view of the Everglades. Through her research and prose, Marjory demonstrated why the Everglades were not a swampy wasteland for man to drain and conquer—but rather an ecological and cultural treasure to be saved. Work to protect and restore the Greater Everglades continues today, in Marjory's footsteps. Restoring the historic flow of clean water through the River of Grass is the key to saving not only the southern Everglades, but also the St. Lucie River in Martin County, the Caloosahatchee River in Southwest Florida, Lake Okeechobee, and Florida Bay. Eve Samples, Executive Director of Friends of the Everglades, provides an update on progress and challenges across the Greater Everglades.
