'A Way We Grow'

Martha's Vineyard Garden Club

July 2024

From our President...

It may be my imagination, but I feel that this June has been the most beautiful, weather-wise, of all my recent memories of the Vineyard. The blue skies, pink sunsets, and moderate temperatures seem to make each day special. The occasional rain is just enough .... helping with the watering of the gardens and allowing prolific blooms! How lucky we are to be here on this special Island!

AND ABOUT BLOOMING ART..... I really hope as many of you as possible were able to make it to the Old Mill for that wonderful show! The weather was gorgeous (see above), and the Old Mill itself showed herself off as the Grand Old Lady she is! With Susan Hobart's gentle but relentless guidance, there were dehumidifiers, ceiling fans, and new lighting throughout. Carol Goldstein worked her magic to have all the cleaning and landscaping done. Blooming Art is essentially an art show with floral designs made especially for each piece of art to interpret it and compliment it. The result is awesome.

The sub-committees within the BA Committee worked tirelessly throughout the year to bring this exhibition alive:

1. First of all, Jayne Isford, Debbie Barrett, and Fern Vaughn made up the Floral Design committee, offering a plethora of guidance-filled workshops and help. Thirty six MV Garden Club members worked their magic with flowers, grasses, and foraged plant materials to create their floral beauty.

2. Joan Cavazutti and Sheila Fane did the monumental work of bringing the talents of Island artists of all mediums together for the show. Thirty six paintings, sculptures, and photographs were professionally displayed in our Mill – lovely to see!

3. The Docent committee was led by Gaye Smith and Carol Goldstein. This team essentially had to organize over forty Garden Club members to help direct guests through the Mill and to offer information about the artists and the materials the floral designers chose in their arrangements. This committee also was in charge of admissions and financial matters.

4. Donna Arold helped with publicity, Ty Johnston and Stephen Chapman worked on posters and programs (artwork beautifully done by Stephen), and Susie Wallo assisted with the payments at the door!!!!

You can see how many of our members worked collaboratively on this very special event. Please check out the pictures on the website!

Please read this newsletter to stay abreast of all future events! The Edgartown Stroll and the the Centennial Garden Party are approaching fast!! Also, see you soon at the members' meeting on July 16 which features MV Museum's Bow VanRiper, who will walk us through the outstanding history of the Martha's Vineyard Garden Club.

Floral Design Update...

Flowers, Friendship and Summer!

“I must have flowers, always and always” Quote by Claude Monet.

Your floral design committee continues to have a busy summer schedule! We are so

pleased with the success of Blooming Art 2024 due to the hard work of the Blooming Art Committee members. Special thanks to our team of 36 floral designers. You were a joy to work with and your designs were magnificent.

Garden Stroll

We were honored to be asked by Garden Stroll Co-Chairs Anne Kushwaha and Deb Daley to create 10 teacups with artificial flowers and materials to be on display at the Carnegie from July 14 th to 28 th in honor of the Club’s Centennial. Participating club members are:

Wiet Bacheller, Ally Doriss, Joan Eville, Minor Gibson Knight, Pat Ingalls, Kathy Kitsock, Susan Shea, Leah Smith, Susie Wallo, Trudy Williams.

We will also be creating 7 teapots decorated with fresh flowers donated by Morning Glory.

These will be on display at the entrance to each garden on the Stroll on July 25 th, and at the registration entrance. If you would like to help with this, contact Jayne Isford at floraldesign@marthasvineyardgardenclub.org.

Hospice Soiree

We will be assisting Wiet Bacheller and Susie Wallo in preparing floral arrangements for the tables at the Hospice Soiree on August 5 th at Farm Neck Golf Club. We will need roughly 10 members to assist with this fun activity for such a worthwhile cause. Contact Jayne Isford at floraldesign@marthasvineyardgardenclub.org if you are interested!

Next Nancy’s Challenge

Our next Nancy’s Challenge will take place at the September Membership meeting. The theme will be “Ahh, September”. More details to follow from Nancy.

Floral Arrangement from Norah van Riper

Look for the lovely arrangement from club member Norah van Riper on display at our July membership meeting. In keeping with the theme of the meeting, 100 years of Conservation and Horticulture at our Garden Club, Norah will be doing a retro arrangement for us all to enjoy. Thank you, Norah! And it just so happens that Norah’s husband, Bow van Riper, Librarian for the MV Museum is the speaker!

Thanks to everyone for supporting Floral Design with our club. If you have any ideas or suggestions, please contact Nancy Cabot or Jayne Isford!

You don’t want to miss this...

A Centennial Garden Party!

Jane and Ivan Bradbury are graciously opening the gardens and grounds of their waterfront home in Edgartown on Thursday August 1st from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm to celebrate our 100th Anniversary at what was once the home of the founder of our Garden Club, Mrs. Agnes Meikleham.

Enjoy a selection of scrumptious nibbles, select libations, and a raw bar provided by Buckley’s Gourmet Catering while you stroll through gardens lovingly maintained in the spirit of Mrs. Meikleham by Jane and Ivan. The Union Jack garden is still very much the same as when Mrs. Meikleham resided there. It is a treasure that is not to be missed.

This is a “tented” event, complete with lovely string music that complements the gardens and views of the Edgartown Harbor. Jane has produced a one of a kind tribute booklet that will be given to each guest as a memento. This special celebration of our 100th year is limited to 100 guests. Tickets are $250 of which $150 is tax deductible. This is a rain or shine event.

Please click here to be directed to our payment portal to purchase admission to the Garden Party securely via the MVGC website.

Any questions please contact Susie Wallo, Centennial Garden Party Chairperson - 508-776-6050.

Old Mill News...

Rejuvenation of the Old Mill has commenced! The electrical system was upgraded and fans, dehumidifiers, lighting and WIFI were installed just in time for Blooming Art.

The Garden Club applied for and received Community Preservation grants of $10,000

each from Chilmark, Edgartown, Oak Bluffs, Tisbury and West Tisbury for safety

improvements to our venerable old lady. The funding will also be used to rebuild the interior stairs to meet current building codes. That work will be scheduled for the winter season. -submitted by Susan Hobart, Old Mill Committee

TWO Scholarship Recipients this year in honor of our Centennial!

Joan Eville, representing the Martha’s Vineyard Garden Club, gave out two scholarships of $1,500.00 each at the 2024 Class Night on June 7th. The award recipients were Henry Coogan and Charles Porterfield. The Garden Club has traditionally given a scholarship each June to a senior planning to major in horticulture, agriculture, or environmental science. In honor of our club’s 100th Anniversary the members voted to award two scholarships this year. The generosity of the membership enabled this goal to be achieved.

Dahlia Daze!

From our Chilmark/Aquinnah VP, Irene Ziebarth:

Remember the dahlia bulbs someone gave us one meeting? Irene planted hers a bit early and had to bring it in three times to spend the night indoors during frost warnings. But now it is 24" tall with four flower buds. How are yours doing?

***MEMBERS! Do send your dahlia pics to news@marthasvineyardgardenclub.org with a little story and your name and we'll post it in the August news!

Some more shares from Member's Gardens!

Many Garden Club members were lucky enough to have known Judy Bryant, and if you didn't you probably heard her name connected to the Garden Club in some capacity, because she truly did it all as a member! Sadly, Judy passed shortly after leaving the Island a few years ago, but the joy she shared with us lives on through her beautiful roses! Here are some photos shared by Garden Club members of 'Judy's Roses'. Your joyful spirit lives on...thank you, Judy!

Photos and words from GC Member

MaryAnn Dolezsar:

'Here is my Van D. Rose that Judy B. Propagated. It covers the outdoor shower.

The most beautiful shade of light pink. Happy summer!'

Photos (below) and words from Donna Arold, MVGC Member and Communications person: "I bought two of Judy's roses, Dr. W Van Fleet at the Greenhouse plant sale in May, 2023. We added the trellis last May, I planted the roses and crossed my fingers. They were absolutely spectacular this June and allowed for the creation of some charming flower arrangements. Its a happy summer for sure!"

Its the MV Garden Club's Centennial Year!
