School on Wheels of Massachusetts
| |
School on Wheels of Massachusetts (SOWMA) will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2024, continuing its mission to educate children and youth impacted by homelessness and poverty.
The organization provides tutoring, mentoring and customized backpacks and school supplies to students from pre-k through post-secondary education and career. Services are orchestrated by trained volunteers, who donate time and heart to shepherd kids through school and college or vocational training.
In 2004, Founder Cheryl Opper began collecting school supplies for students living at a family shelter in Brockton, Massachusetts. She asked neighbors and friends to help gather and customize supplies, using her kitchen table as the meeting space, and her basement as inventory central.
Today the organization provides backpacks to more than 9,000 students, pairs high school and post-secondary students with mentors, and tutors children at family shelters, transitional housing, libraries, and more recently, hotels. Tutoring sessions take place in fourteen communities, from Lowell to New Bedford, including on the South Shore - Brockton, Middleboro, Norwell, Plymouth, Rockland, Stoughton, Taunton and Weymouth. The organization is always looking for volunteers to collect and assemble backpacks and school supplies, help students with homework and learning skills, and guide students into and through college, vocational training and careers.
For information or to volunteer or donate, visit www.sowma.org
