Minchew and Price Honored for Service to Their Community

Two longtime supporters of the Marshall Center – Randy Minchew and Steve Price – have just been named Loudoun Laureates. The Loudoun Laurels organization promotes increased educational support for traditionally underserved populations and honors lifetime stewardship and leadership contributions made by citizens of Loudoun County for the benefit of the community.

Minchew has been an active board member of the Marshall Center since November 2020. He currently serves as chair of the Development Committee. Minchew was a founding member and two-term chairman of the Loudoun County Economic Development Commission, as well as a founding member and co-chair of the Rural Economic Development Task Force. He also served three terms in the House of Delegates representing Loudoun County and the Town of Leesburg.

Price served on the board of the Marshall Center for 15 years. As president, he oversaw the six-year renovation of historic Dodona Manor, the home of George and Katherine Marshall. In his role as general counsel to the Land Trust of Virginia, he was instrumental in securing the protection of thousands of undeveloped acres in Loudoun County. As chair of the Virginia Piedmont Heritage Area Association, he expanded educational outreach in schools across the Heritage Area.

Congratulations, Randy and Steve, for your selfless service!

Off Duty Outdoor Speaker Series Returns!

May 15: CIA Historian Nicholas Reynolds to Discuss “Ernest Hemingway's Secret Adventures”

Join us Wednesday, May 15 from 5:30 – 7 p.m. for an in-person discussion of “Writer, Sailor, Soldier, Spy: Ernest Hemingway’s Secret Adventures, 1935-1966” with Nicholas Reynolds.

While he was the historian at the CIA Museum, Nicholas Reynolds—a longtime American intelligence officer, former U.S. Marine colonel and Oxford-trained historian—began to uncover clues suggesting Nobel Prize-winning novelist Ernest Hemingway was deeply involved in mid-20th-century spycraft. Reynolds’s captivating narrative “looks among the shadows and finds a Hemingway not seen before” (London Review of Books), revealing for the first time a hidden side of Hemingway's life: his troubling recruitment by Soviet spies, followed by a complex set of secret relationships with American agencies.

Join us for a live presentation and Q&A session at Dodona Manor with the author on this fascinating topic!

Off Duty is an outdoor speaker series hosted by the George C. Marshall International Center. Each event features a speaker discussing a topic that touches on history adjacent to George C. Scouts Plant Peace Garden at Dodona

A dedicated team of volunteers gathered at Dodona Manor on a recent spring weekend to create something special: a tranquil new space that promotes harmony and community. Led by future Eagle Scout Derin Tombuloglu of Troop 998, the group dug in and erected a beautiful peace garden in front of General Marshall’s home for visitors and the entire community to enjoy.

Bringing the peace garden to life was a true team effort forged in the spirit of community service and unity.

Leslie Solitario of River’s Edge Landscapes generously volunteered her time and expertise advising on the project design. Scouts cleaned and prepared the site, laid the brick border and installed the four flagstones – donated by Jim Foley of Frederick Block, Brick & Stone. The team then constructed and painted a new bench, dug the hole for the peace pole (which was donated by the Rotary Club of Leesburg) and secured it in cement.
