Art that supports Maritime Gloucester

New Hampshire based artist Liz Sibley Fletcher began her journey as an artist playing with clay in her childhood home on Rocky Neck in Gloucester. Decades later she is bringing her magnificent sculptures back to Gloucester for an art sale to benefit Pathways for Children and Maritime Gloucester. For both organizations, this is another wonderful collaboration of many that they have embarked on over the years. For the past several years the children of Pathways have learned about Gloucester's rich maritime history through the outstanding educational programs offered by Maritime Gloucester.

The art sale will be held on Saturday June 3rd from 10am to 4pm at Fletcher's Rocky Neck home. Parking is available in the public lot at the entrance to Rocky Neck. Follow the signs to the sale. Several ceramic pieces will be featured both large and small; all proceeds will benefit Pathways for Children and Maritime Gloucester.

Concert kicks off our summer season
Roaring Forties from Australia

Please join us in welcoming the musical group The Roaring Forties as they deliver a powerful performance of maritime songs from "Down Under" with their combined voices that create a distinctive sound loved by so many.

The Roaring Forties takes its name from the strong westerly winds found off the coast of Australia, over an expanse of deep sea so turbulent it is known as the "Roaring Forties".

Guests arrive at 6:30 for wine-tasting from Russell Orchards of Ipswich with a selection of their prize-winning wines and famous cider donuts. Concert begins at 7:15.

Saturday, June 3rd
Tickets are $15/members, $20/non-members.

Maritime Gloucester members in the news!
Is there anything this man can't do?

Maritime Gloucester Board member, master woodworker, experienced sailor, raconteur Jay McLauchlan will be speaking this Sunday, May 20th, at the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist church about the church's Paul Revere bell. Hear Jay tell about how the large bell came to Gloucester and how it was raised to the tall tower (something about 100 trained seagulls....). Jay can frequently be found at Maritime Gloucester building or repairing something; he's shown above working on our marine railway.
Where
: Gloucester UU Church, 10 Church Street, Gloucester
When
: 10AM, Sunday May 20th

Teacher of the Year

Maritime Gloucester member, Cara Pekarcik, has just been named Massachusetts 2018 Teacher of the Year . Congratulations, Cara!

She's seen here getting inspiration for a high school science lesson at last year's HarborLab lobster dissection.

We're not saying being a Maritime Gloucester leads to greatness, but it can't hurt! Sign up today. If you know of a Maritime Gloucester member doing something noteworthy, please let us know.

Undefeated Gloucester High School Sailing Team

Shamelessly stolen from a Facebook post by MG member, Gordon Baird:

"The Gloucester High School Sailing team is undefeated at 7-0 and I guess you could say, is on a roll. GHS has defeated Beverly, Winthrop, Wellesley, Landmark School, and Swampscott twice. This is all accomplished by mostly underclassmen, sophomores primarily, led by the unassuming but brilliant Austin Monell and John Andrews (the legendary Clayton Morrissey's great-grandson) with a star supporting cast of Team Captain Isabel Gleckner, Martha Rand, Gus Campbell, Amanda Budrow, Olivia and Sophia Hogan-Lopez, Kerry McNealy and newcomer Charlie Prentiss. All have contributed to our win streak with 17 different crew and skipper combinations since the competitions began all tailored to each day's conditions for weight, talent and teamwork. With only 2 contests left in the season, GHS is poised to make it to the Mass Bay League Playoffs in Boston later in the month.

"The great news is that sailing as a high school sport is thriving in Gloucester right now without athletic department or sports section support. (The team) is a testament to what kids and parents and volunteers can do with work, knowledge and desire..."

We are proud to host the GHS Sailing, offering storage and a jumping off place for their practices. Go GHS Sailing! Follow them on Facebook.
