6-foot-2 Cardinal Spellman HS rising senior wing Maria Backman makes her call to be a Wolverine. Over the Weekend while taking part in Michigan Elite camp, Backman gave her pledged to head Coach Kim Barnes-Arico and her staff. NYGHoops Report got a chance to speak to Backman and her New Heights Travel coach Curtis 'Lucky' Simpson about her decision.
Maria start off the conversation by saying "I fell in love with the school and I verbally committed to the University of Michigan; I fell in love with the academics, everything that they offered students, especially the M-Pact program they offer to student athletes." Backman who originally planned on cutting down her list down to 4-5 schools in mid June, but could not resist goes on to say "Overall I just truly fell in love with the school; also the opportunity of me coming in and playing and having an impact on the team was a huge factor for me to; the coaching staff was great and Coach Arico having an outstanding first season shows a lot of promise in the program."
New Heights head coach Simpson " Michigan is getting great academic kid, gym rat and a person that leads by example..; For someone that was unknown last year, worked her tail off, and became the player she is now, Words can describe how proud of her I am." Backman who held over 50 scholarship offers cut her list to 15 mid May before making her decision over the weekend: Michigan, Georgetown, Yale, Virginia tech, St. John's, NC Stat, Boston College, Auburn, Rutgers, Fordham, UCF, ECU, Providence, Hofstra, Delaware."
