National Reading Month

March is National Reading Month -- the perfect time to celebrate reading with kids! Reading together grows brains, empathy, and connection, and it's never too soon to start sharing books with children. Here are some tips for reading with kids:

  • Make reading part of your routine. Bedtime books are a great way to wind down, but try other times too, like a read-aloud during breakfast or a family audiobook in the car. Try to read out loud at least 15 minutes a day.
  • Get cozy. Take the time for closeness and connection. Read with your child snuggled up next to you or on your lap.
  • Be dramatic. Make your story time more interesting by trying different voices, making dramatic facial expressions, and using your body to tell the story.
  • Know when to stop. You don't have to finish every book you start. Make reading fun and positive, and put the book aside when your child loses interest.
  • Let your child choose books. Take your children to the library and let them pick out books to read together.
