White Plains Speed Limit Reduced to 25 MPH | |

The City of White Plains will be reducing the speed limit from 30 MPH to 25 MPH citywide. The lower speed limit will make city streets safer for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.
Starting in May, the City of White Plains Transportation Department will commence the process of installing new signs indicating the new citywide 25 mile per hour speed limit.
The new 25 MPH speed limit will not apply to:

The City of White Plains has been selected to participate in the Youth Climate Action Fund, supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies.
This opportunity allows the City to fund micro-grants to rapidly launch and support youth-led climate initiatives. White Plains organizations that serve youth ages 15-24 can apply for up to $5,000 for a project to help facilitate climate action within our city.

Historic Groundbreaking for Mt. Hope Plaza Affordable Housing Project on Lake Street | |
|
After a decade of planning, the construction of Mt. Hope Plaza, an affordable housing project for seniors in White Plains, has begun.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held at the site at 63 Lake Street on April 12 attended by a host of local officials and community members.
The $40 million development, a collaboration between Mt. Hope A.M.E Zion Church and Community Housing Innovations, will offer 56 affordable apartments, with 20 units earmarked for those needing supportive services.
The six-story building will feature a structured parking garage, with 47 spaces shared with the church. All 56 apartments are designated for adults aged 62 and older with income at or below 60 percent of the Area Median Income. Twenty units will specifically cater to seniors experiencing homelessness, supported by services funded under the Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative.

White Plains Memorial Day Parade Monday, May 27
The 2024 White Plains Memorial Day Parade steps off from the corner of Church and Main St at 10 am on Monday, May 27. The parade proceeds up Main St. and North Broadway to the Soldiers and Sailors Monument at the White Plains Rural Cemetery.
The City invites community organizations and businesses to participate as marchers. If you'd like to march, please call 914.422.1424 or email atofano@whiteplainsny.gov. This is the City's longest parade route and there are many comfortable viewing points along the way.

The Deceased Ceremony Honoree is U.S. Army veteran Harry Bright, who was the first African American to serve on the White Plains Common Council and was Director of the White Plains Commission on Human Rights for 12 years. | |

Through the Summer Employment Program run by the White Plains Youth Bureau, White Plains youth ages
14 -21 are provided paid internships and employment within a variety of city departments, camps, and non-profit organizations during the summer months.
Once you have submitted an approved application packet, identification and resume you will be invited to the Job Fair. You MUST attend the Job Fair to be considered for a summer job.

Sustainable Westchester is looking for Con Edison customers to sign up for the Community Solar project opportunity to save up to 10% on their monthly electric bill.
Subscribers do not install solar panels on their homes. They will be subscribed to the Community Solar project that will provide a guaranteed savings on their Con Edison bill.
Priority enrollment is awarded to low/moderate income household and those enrolled in HEAP, SNAP, TANF, SSI, Empower+. Sustainable Westchester staff will help those who sign up to determine their eligibility enrollment.

WP Fire Chief Douglas McMath Retires
Congratulations to Fire Chief Douglas McMath who retired in April after three years as Chief. Chief McMath served in the White Plains Fire Department in a variety of capacities for 31 years.
The Interim Fire Chief is Claudio Petriccione, who has been with the department for 26 years and has served as Deputy Fire Chief since 2023.

White Plains Youth Police Initiative
Congratulations to the 12 White Plains youth and 10 White Plains Police Officers who completed the week-long Spring 2024 session of the White Plains Youth Police Initiative.
YPI is a prevention and early intervention program designed to enhance trust between law enforcement, teenagers, and their families. It is a collaboration between the White Plains Youth Bureau, the White Plains Police Department, and Grandpa's United.
