Speaker Spotlight: Dr. Kathryn Taylor

Dr. Kathryn Taylor will be joining us to present Burkholderia pseudomallei and Candida auris.

Burkholderia has typically been only travel associated, but was recently identified in environmental samples on the MS Gulf Coast. MS had 3 cases in the coastal area across 3 years and CDC came down and did some testing. This is the first time it was identified in the environment in the continental US.

Candida auris is a fungal infection that is typically multi drug resistant. It is spread easily in healthcare facilities once introduced unless proper precautions are taken and appropriate cleaning products used.

Dr. Kathryn Taylor, a MAFP member and Interim State Epidemiologist for the MS Department of Health is a graduate of the University of Mississippi School of Medicine and holds a board certification in Family Medicine. Prior to joining MSDH, she spent two years as an assistant professor in Family Medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center and five years in private practice in the Jackson area. She joined MSDH in 2015 as a District Health Officer. Since then, she has served as a Deputy Regional Health Officer, a medical consultant in the Office of Epidemiology, and most recently as Deputy State Epidemiologist.
