Ministry highlights of
Sugar Creek Bible Camp
March 2023
Transitions are happening all around Sugar Creek. We bid Pastor Lucy Hardie farewell at the end of January as she moved on to her first Pastoral call. We also welcomed Stephanie Engel as our new Program Director in February. This month we say hello to Miranda Arelt, our new Wrangler. I hope you have received the new summer camp brochure in your mailbox; if not, let us know. Also check out our redesigned website!

Horseback Riding has Bright Future at Sugar Creek Bible Camp
Miranda Arelt Hired as Barn Manager
The camp staff and board are excited to announce that Miranda Arelt of Faith, South Dakota, has been hired to the new full-time role as Barn Manager for Sugar Creek!

Horseback riding, wagon rides, and basic animal care have for decades been memorable parts of many of Sugar Creek’s programs. The new Barn Manager position means we will be able to offer more horse-related activities both year-round and as part of summer camp. We hope to refresh and grow our gentle herd of about 20 horses and ponies, explore new ways to involve our horses in our Christian mission, and even to build new relationships with fellow horse enthusiasts across the Midwest.

Miranda brings a wealth of knowledge and experience with horse programs. During her summers in college, Miranda worked as a wrangler at horse camps in the Dakotas, including a therapeutic riding program. She then worked full time as a Trainer’s Assistant at a riding center in Minnesota, later working in food production and customer service. Miranda also offers modern academic knowledge of horses to Sugar Creek, having earned a Bachelor’s degree from North Dakota State, where she double majored in Equine and Animal Sciences. Her sincere faith, love of teaching, and passion for Christian mission give purpose to her field of expertise, evidence that her new role is a true vocation.

Today we welcome Miranda to the beautiful Sugar Creek valley in Wisconsin along with her (horse-friendly) border collie, Hank. Please join us in welcoming her – and praying that God continues to provide for, guide, inspire, and equip Miranda (and our horses) to lead safe and meaningful adventures in outdoor ministry.

Thank you to all the delegates, clergy, board members and camp supporters that came out for the SCBC Annual Meeting on Sunday, February 19, 2023. The 2022 Annual Report celebrated and reported all the wonderful things that happened at Sugar Creek this year.
Executive Director, Jesse Klosterboer, reported an exciting year of growth in programs at Sugar Creek, thanking the staff and volunteers for their faith-filled and diligent work. Visions and goals in summer Bible camp, various facility improvements, continued financial stability, and innovative program design to meet the post-pandemic challenges faced by youth, families, and congregations.

Board President, Carla Stanton shared the SCBC story with over 80 guests on the beautiful Sunday afternoon. She asked all to intentionally share the Sugar Creek story and invite a child or youth to attend summer camp, a young adult to apply for a summer staff position, and an adult to participate in one or more of our year-round opportunities.

This invitation is extended to all, with gratitude for the many ways the Sugar Creek story is already being told.
Thrivent Financial members with available Choice Dollars® have until March 31, 2023, to direct last year’s (2022) Thrivent Choice dollars. Don’t miss this opportunity to recommend that Thrivent Financial provide outreach funding to Sugar Creek Bible Camp.
In the Wild
I Tawt I Saw a Puddy Cat-I did, I did!
Getting out of my car on a drizzly March morning I heard rawr screech noise and hustled toward the office door with my hair standing on end. When I turned around I saw a large cat bounding up the embankment and fading into the trees. Although I cannot be sure, after doing some internet sluething, I believe it was a lynx. It was very fluffy with dark and tan fur, no spots. Little tufts of hair on its face and ears were quite distinctive. We did not find any identifiable tracks in the snow, mud, and leaves. Sounds that I had previously thought to birds that sounded a bit like a monkey or child were identified online as lynx calls.
I want to reassure everyone, this is not an everyday occurance at camp and I was in no danger at any time.
