The spring ground is fertile, arugula and most winter greens are going to seed, red cabbage and broccoli are ready for harvest--what bounty! We got a Food Waste Diversion grant from LA City! We partnered with Eco-Civilization, Southern California Parliament of World's Religions, and Pilgram Place to present with scholars and theologians on Eco-Justice--stay tuned for a YouTube link to content generated during the outstanding event.
It's almost Easter/Passover--see below to order your non-GMO food-bearing Life Cycle plant arrangements for tables and altars! (Then, instead of tossing day-old, pesticide-soaked cut holiday flowers, opt-in to planting the plants afterward with Netiya on April 2nd in South LA!)
Read about two Netiya partner sites that have broken out of dormancy this Spring, inspiring Netiya to keep up the work to green churches, synagogues, and mosques throughout LA County. Netiya students from Lainer School participated in a comprehensive process to design and plant up an edible, permanent feature on Pilot Plaza at Sinai Temple/Lainer School! They also led an amazing Tu B'Shevat Seder for the whole school. Milken High School students rolled up their sleeves for two separate work days at our Shared Earth Project at the Unitarian Universalist Church / Temple Beth Ohr in Studio City, and at the Emmanuel HM Turner AME Church in South LA, where we met our partners from City of Youth to install and plant up nearly 500 sq ft of garden in new raised beds! Yes, of course, pictures will be visible soon--in fact, check back for our new website later this month!
Spring has sprung, and on this International Women's Day, we're feeling the buzz. Below, sign up for Netiya's 4-part Parent & Me Urban Homesteading Classes in April, and other garden wellness offerings at the Homestead. And SAVE the DATE: May 6th is our Annual Back to the Roots Fundraiser and will be in Studio City. You won't want to miss it!
So Many Blessings,

Skid Row Educational Planting Day
On April 19th, Netiya will partner with Worthy of Love to install and plant a rooftop garden on Skid Row, working with homeless youth to plant seeds and talk about healthy eating. We are excited by this opportunity to create another sorely needed food garden.

Lainer School Tu B'Shevat Install
Netiya partnered with Lainer School on a beautiful Tu B'Shevat orchard install. Our Torah of Gardening middle school students took on an inspiring leadership role at this event, and also lent plenty of elbow grease to our planting efforts, shoveling hundreds of pounds of compost. We couldn't be more proud, and look forward to developing a Green Leadership Team with these students in the coming months!

City of LA Food Waste Challenge Grant
Netiya is proud to have been one of seven project grantees in the City of LA's Food Waste Challenge! Over the next two months, we will be working with Lainer School students to perform an institutional food waste audit, implement a composting system, work with school leadership to find additional ways to prevent and divert food waste, and educate their community during a school-wide Zero Waste Event.

Greening EASTER: Bringing Life to the Altar
|
Netiya’s Life Cycle Project provides an opportunity to rethink the use of expensive, pesticide-soaked flowers that impact farmworker health; land/air and water and may have traveled across an ocean to be used on church altars or as event centerpieces. To protect and celebrate Mother Nature, we offer a more ethical way of decorating your Altar by creating sustainable Life Cycle baskets. After the event, plants will be grown to
tithe
healthy food for/with people who need it the most in our city.
*In a typical year, between 85-95% of the most common fresh cut flowers sold in the U.S. are imported from Columbia and Ecuador. According to the Labor Education in the Americas Project, Ecuadorian flower companies use over 30 different pesticides in cut flowers, and 20% of the chemicals applied during flower production in Columbia are restricted or banned in the U.S. and Europe.
