Meet February featured artist: Elsa Voelcker.
Elsa received her B.A. while studying with Carl Chiarenza in art history from Boston University. She studied with Lee Broman at the Museum of Fine Arts School in Boston and then with Nathan and Joan Lyons and Keith Smith among others at the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, New York while acquiring an M.F.A. with a minor in history of photography through SUNY Buffalo.
Elsa's major interest has been in documentary and portrait photography. She finds capturing the spirit of the person she sees in front of her is the biggest challenge. Making the sitter feel safe and willing to reveal who they are to her is paramount. She has continued to practice traditional film photography because of her love of the reflective quality of silver as well as its stability. However, the lure of color has her practicing digital photography, as well, invetigating its ability to express feelings and ideas. Elsa's new work is investigating the use of digital imagery to create meditative experiences that allow the viewer to slow down and emerse themselves in her vision.
Elsa has been a member of the New Hampshire Womens Caucus for Art since 1972 and was elected its president from 2001-2003. She has led many different artist groups. She was an Artist Leadership Network leader for many years and started the WCA Monadnock Pod in 2016.
Elsa has a retrospective opening March 7 - Read more in Member News.
