Issue 10 | March 2020
Along about seven miles of Route 7, we're adding a third lane and shared-use paths in each direction, building a pedestrian underpass to access Colvin Run Mill Park , replacing and raising the bridge over Difficult Run, and making many intersection, bicycle and pedestrian improvements. Learn more.
Construction and Design Updates
In February, crews continued construction activities along the corridor, including:

  • Difficult Run/Colvin Run area--clearing, erosion & sediment (E&S) controls, utility installation and bridge median removal
  • Clearing and E&S controls along eastbound Route 7 from Baron Cameron Avenue to Carpers Farm Way
  • Topsoil stripping between Reston Parkway and Utterback Store Road
  • Earth-moving operations between Reston Avenue and Bishopsgate Way
  • Storm sewer installation between Reston Avenue and Delta Glen Drive
  • Relocation of water main between Reston Avenue and Reston Parkway
  • Placing barrier along the median of Route 7 between Lewinsville Road and Jarrett Valley Drive.

Design work continues for lighting and landscaping and the electrical and intelligent transportation systems (ITS). Third-party utility design is also ongoing.

Tabulation of Potential Noise Barrier Public Input Survey Questionnaires from benefited parcel owners and tenants along the corridor continued through February. Click here to learn more about the noise wall process.

Did You Know?

Have you noticed the orange flags overhead while driving along Route 7? The utilities above eastbound and westbound Route 7 have been flagged for safety and visibility while crews work along the corridor with heavy equipment. It's also a good reminder for drivers to slow down and be alert!
Safe Work Zones for All

April 20-24 marks the 20th anniversary of National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW), which originated in Virginia as part of a safety campaign to raise awareness about work zone safety before the summer construction season goes into full swing.

The workers you see along the Route 7 corridor are community members, parents, sons, and daughters just like your own loved ones. Please help us keep Virginia's highways safe for road users and workers alike.

We encourage drivers to focus on safe driving habits such as obeying reduced work zone speed limits (and avoiding higher fines!), staying alert while driving through work zones , and remembering that use of a hand-held cell phone is prohibited in Virginia while driving through a work zone .
