Women and Homeownership

Manna, Inc honored Women’s History Month by hosting a home ownership workshop at Calvary Women’s Services. The workshop provided an opportunity to discuss ways to move from affordable renting into homeownership. During the workshop participants discussed their goals for permanent housing and identified paths to homeownership through district programs and resources available through Manna, Inc's Home Ownership Center.

The truth is, with rising interest rates, and economic challenges, the path to homeownership can feel daunting. Systematic barriers including income inequality, and gaps in opportunity have left many women, especially women of color, facing a daily struggle to have a roof over their heads. Women led households often carry the extra burden of dependent care. This financial burden was made worse by the pandemic.

Despite these challenges, women have increased their presence in the housing market and the homeownership rate of households led by women continues to increase. At Manna, Inc we understand that access to affordable housing is essential for the wellbeing of women. Over 70% of households served through our Homeownership Center are headed by women. Housing impacts education, health, employment, and food security. Our Home Ownership Center provides housing counseling and financial literacy classes at no cost. We know that when women are empowered and economically stable, communities thrive. During Women’s’ History Month, and every month, we celebrate women, working towards homeownership, and keeping our communities strong.

Advocacy and Homeownership

Manna, Inc's Housing Advocacy Team (HAT) collaborates with community-based organizations, attends trainings, and appeals to law and policy makers to fund affordable rental and homeownership programs and projects within the district and beyond. The HAT participates in community forums, prepares testimony for the DC City Council and offers opportunities to learn more about civic engagement and housing. If you would like to learn more about housing advocacy or join HAT, please reply to this email stating your interest.
