We need your help to "get the lead out'

The State of North Dakota is working to “get the lead out” of the state’s drinking water pipes, and the City of Mandan and its residents are being asked to help.

The City, with the help of engineering consultant AE2S, will soon begin contacting property owners asking them to check out their water service pipe (the pipe coming from outside that provides water to your home or business). A letter, scheduled to arrive mid- to late-March, will provide instructions on how to determine your pipe material, and include a link and QR code to a short survey. This will be a simple survey that will take less than 10 minutes to complete.

The City of Mandan is committed to partnering with the community to ensure our water is lead-free. Please look for this letter in March. We need everyone’s assistance to accomplish this important task!

Funding for this project is provided through a contractual agreement between the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality Drinking Water State Revolving Fund and AE2S.

2024 Spring Clean-Up is April 13-20

Litter Clean-Up Day changing to Litter Clean-Up Month

After three years of needing to make changes to the annual Community Clean-Up Day, City staff and the Community Beautification Committee have decided to make a permanent change to the volunteer-led clean-up day. Community Litter Clean-Up Day is now Community Litter Clean-Up Month!

Businesses, civic organizations and youth groups are encouraged to take responsibility for picking up litter along various routes during the month of May. The City and Keep North Dakota Clean will provide supplies, route guidance, and more. Supplies will not e available until after April 19. Volunteers cleaning-up routes in May will be eligible for prize drawings.

There are approximately 17 routes identified for the volunteer project. Routes are easiest to work with a group of 8-10 people, however individuals may sign up for a route and City staff will help organize or get them connected with another group to clean-up the route. View routes and sign-up to volunteer at cityofmandan.com/littercleanup

NarDawahl's Tattoo Emporium & Buffalo Gypsy win Golden Shovel

The City of Mandan will recognize NarDawahl’s Tattoo Emporium & Buffalo Gypsy, located at 122 W Main St, as the winner of the 2023-2024 Golden Shovel award at the March 5 City Commission meeting. NarDawahl’s and Buffalo Gypsy will receive a traveling golden shovel to display for the remainder of the year, and a social media spotlight.

With a fairly calm winter, the public nominated three Mandan businesses doing a good job keeping walkways free of snow and ice this winter. Voting took place Feb. 5-16. Nine votes separated the winner and runner-up, Mane Expressions.

The goal of these contests was to improve the city’s sparkle, accessibility and pedestrian friendliness during the winter season.

Thank you to the businesses and public for participating in these fun contests. Stay tuned for 2024-2025 winter decorating and golden shovel contest details.

Board of Equalization to meet April 2

The City Assessing Department will mail notices of increases the middle of March to property owners with a 2024 real estate valuation increase of $3,000 and 10% or more. Owners not in agreement with the assessed value may initiate a review of the property valuation by contacting the Assessing Department. Owners may ultimately appeal the valuation to the City Board of Equalization.

If you do not receive a notice come mid-March, view your property card at cityofmandan.com/assessing to find your property value for 2024. The Board of Equalization will meet on Tuesday, Apr. 2 at 7 p.m. at City Hall to discuss property valuation changes. The County Board of Equalization will meet in June. Local taxing authorities will take valuations into account when setting mill levies used to generate property tax revenue for 2025 budgets.

The State Board of Equalization requires all property be valued within 10% of prevailing market values. Frequent reasons for notices of increased value include properties with a new or additional structure added within the last year and situations involving expiration of an exemption, such as for new homes or businesses. Values may also change in 2024 as a result of fluctuating market value due to sales of comparable properties occurring in 2023.

For more information, visit cityofmandan.com/assessing. To request a reassessment of a property, call 701-667-3232.

Filing deadline is April 8 for local elections

Candidates are circulating petitions for several positions up for election in 2024. Petitions must be filed no later than 4 p.m. on April 8.

Open positions include the mayor, municipal court judge, two city commissioners; two park board members; four school board members; and three county commissioners.
