President's Desk Edition
“March Madness is April sadness!” It’s a quote by “unknown” that’s well known to passionate college basketball fans.
So, with a sense of some normalcy, many of us in the upcoming days will enjoy (or not) strategizing over brackets to engage in this ritual of spring. (Printable NCAA 2021 Bracket)
I wish the best of luck to you, and may my team win!
With “normalcy” on all our minds for better than a year, your Chamber is on the fast track! During the past month, we held very well attended events (B2B Happy Hour, Coffee An’Networking) in keeping with county COVID guidelines.
Much more is in the planning including our signature Inspire Awards, Annual Meeting & Awards Breakfast and our late fall Business Showcase. And advertising orders are now being accepted for our 2021-2022 Central Pinellas Business & Community Go-to-Guide. More information on that can be found below.
Lastly, thank you to all who took a few minutes to complete our 2021 Central Pinellas Business Survey.  I had the pleasure of sharing it with our state Legislative Delegation last week, as they prepare for the start of the Legislative Session this week. They were each very interested in what you had to say!
Wishing you all a prosperous and enjoyable month. And, as always, thank you for your continued Chamber support and loyalty!
           Tom Morrissette, President
2021 Central Pinellas Business Survey
Sharing your voice with our state delegation!
A team from the Chamber presented findings of the 2021 Central Pinellas Business Survey to the Pinellas Legislative Delegation last week. It included Chamber President Tom Morrissette, Jake Prokop, Chamber treasurer and director of Pinellas Technical College-Clearwater, and attorney Danielle Noble of McManus & McManus P.A. Meetings were held with FL Rep. Chris Latvala (left photo), House Speaker Chris Sprowls (right photo), Rep. Nick DiCeglie and Sen. Jeff Brandes. In addition to the survey, views were exchanged on education needs and proposed COVID business liability legislation. The 2021 Florida Legislative Session runs March 2 to April 30.

Tampa Bay COVID Update! March 1, 2021
The COVID-19 Regional Re-Opening Dashboard tracks the critical and official public health metrics that guide Tampa Bay residents and policymakers to safely re-open our economy.
It’s produced by the Tampa Bay Partnership.

Case growth rates in Tampa Bay decreased this past week, to 1,178 per day over the 14-day period ending February 28, versus the 1,277 reported the prior week. At 5.88%, Tampa Bay's positive testing rate over the past week remains below the 10% threshold outlined in state and federal re-opening guidelines, and decreased from last week’s rate of 6.74%. Statewide, the positive testing rate was also below the 10% threshold and fell from 6.25% to 5.85%. The 7-day rolling average of Tampa Bay patients hospitalized with a primary diagnosis of COVID-19 decreased by 8.7% in the past week and, as of Sunday, 820 such patients were hospitalized.

Florida’s 40 senators and 120 representatives will convene Tuesday in Tallahassee for one of the strangest legislative sessions in the Capitol’s history.
The governor signed an executive order late Friday that allows physicians, nurses and pharmacists to vaccinate people who “they deem extremely vulnerable to COVID-19.”
The National Hurricane Center and branches of the National Weather Service will consider the changes this year, though the 2021 season will not be impacted.
The bills seek to establish an annual $100 million base Florida Forever allocation, prohibit Land Acquisition Trust Fund money from being used to support direct, technology and information services by state agencies, and extend Florida Forever bonds by 14 years to 2054.
Florida is banning the sale, ownership and breeding of 16 invasive reptiles, including green iguanas, several python species and tegus. However, anyone who currently owns a pet iguana or tegu won’t have to give their scaly critter away.
