Plan to attend

The 24th Annual Irish Wake!

WCAB is once again partnering with HH HINDER BREWERY to bring you a fantastic interactive event...

And let this be the official true accounting of what is going to happen on this WCAB 24th annual Irish Wake...you read it here! No green beer, no lucky charms, but all the coolest stuff that brings respect, love and Waupaca in to the realm of Irish tradition for one day...Hope you can make it.... Slainte!!

  1. Traditional Irish Music Session (starts around 3-ish) with John Laedtke and friends. Lots of musicians will gather...Bring your instrument (if...IF ... IF you know how to play, otherwise just come to listen) There will be songbooks, so if you want to join in, you can!
  2. The Reading of the Honor Roll: Whenever you get there, be sure to find the Honor Roll Book (floating about the brewery, just ask someone) and enter your loved ones lost in the past year. WE will be readin' it off periodically throughout the event.
  3. The Coffin:: Our traditional Coffin, made of pine by local carpenters some 23 years ago, houses all sorts of things people have wanted to let go of: their anger, their mistakes, a tribute to someone they loved, a forgiveness... it's all up to you. we will have little slips of paper for you to write down something you want to let go of, you can toss them in and forgive and let go!
  4. FOOD: We are so lucky to have arranged for the KRB foodtruck to be at the 24th Irish Wake, and they will have Corned Beef and Cabbage (an American Irish tradition) along with other great stuff to eat if you are planning to be there for the long haul...
  5. WE may or may not do some sing-along songs after the trad session at 3... and before Flip O' The Coin... idk. if we do, we will bring songbooks. Be prepared to sing in Gaelic.

Then...after all of that:

Our grand finale will be the epic Flip O' The Coin, playing (at 6:30) all your favorite traditional Irish tunes, to which you can dance...

WCAB's 24th Annual Irish Wake

Flip O' The Coin

The Flip O' The Coin Band plays traditional Celtic (Irish and Scottish) and Old Time dance banjo and fiddle music. In high demand, especially around St. Pat's Day, we are so lucky to have them as part of our Annual Irish Wake. This year they will not disappoint! Don't miss this great event! Waupaca Good News

New Episode of Curiouser to launch March 2!

What does it take to become a successful innkeeper? One school of thought would suggest a degree in hospitality and experience working in the industry. But there are other ways. Paul Cappelle and his beautiful wife Shayna, for instance, took another route. First, as patrons, they fell in love with the Crystal River Bed and Breakfast in the little village of Rural. Secondly, and here’s where they took a gutsy shortcut, they quit their professional careers and bought the B&B. Now, years later, they’ve fine tuned the operation of their renamed Crystal River Inn & Cottages into a thriving destination for travelers from around the country. What were the challenges and what still surprises them? Paul talked about that in his interview with Chuck Reynolds, Bob Tevis, and Mark Gerlach on WAUP 99.1 FM's radio show Curioser.

To hear the whole interview tune in to @WAUP 99.1 on Saturday morning (3/2) at 8:00 a.m. or catch the repeat on Monday evening (3/4) at 6:00 p.m. For our streaming fans, go to live365.com, enter WAUP 99.1 in the search bar and hit play when it comes up.

Local Author Writes new Book!

This beautifully designed and inspiring story by our own local author, Tara Pionkowski is available now in hardcover and softcover.

Nominated for two awards, this delightful tale enjoys an honest conversation between father and daughter. The child shares her hopes and dreams seeking the approval of an adult she adores, her father.

"What do you Want to be?"was written for anyone with dreams who may be anxious to share them but looking for acceptance for who they want to be.

Tara is the person who organizes all of the fundraising done by the Filling Station and Amoco, so we asked her when she added writing to her many skills.

"I was the editor or our school literary magazine in high school and I used to write all the time, but it’s not a “real job” so it was always more of a hobby.," says Tara. "I wrote this story while out taking a walk late one night." She states that this book is a labor of love.

There’s a picture of her father right at the beginning of the book. "It was one of the last pictures taken of him after he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He loved traveling and experiencing new things. In a way it’s my way of making him live on through the book and seeing where he ends up."

Pick up your copy of Tara's book, locally at Office Outfitters, Village Gifts in Amherst, and Piggly Wiggly, or online at Bookbaby and other fine online outlets.

Live Music Emotionally Moves Us More than Streamed Music

How does listening to live music affect the emotional center of our brain? A study carried out at the University of Zurich has found that live performances trigger a stronger emotional response than listening to music from a device. Concerts connect performers with their audience, which may also have to do with evolutionary factors.

So....here you go, a few excellent live music opportunities in our own little corner of the world!!!

Odin and Freja's Place is digging in with a huge variety of live music in March, including Open Mics on Thursdays, and local favorites Ho Malone on March 8. Check out their full lineup!
