March 15, 2024
Dear Claudia:
I probably say this every year (and maybe every month), but these early days of spring is one of my favorite seasons. Why, you ask?
* Maple sugaring season
* Longer days
* More sunshine
* Time to reflect and recharge
Did I mention maple sugaring season? Seriously, the best of all possible texts I receive during the month of March are those from my friends with sugaring operations. Sometimes it’s a single, perfect word, “Boiling.” Other times it’s a slightly more formal invite such as “Swing by the sugarhouse later... we’ll be boiling until 9ish.” IYKYK!
If you are lucky enough to have a friend who makes maple syrup, consider yourself among the fortunate. But for those of us who are not as lucky, there are a few local spots where you can experience the magic firsthand. In addition to the places highlighted in the article below who are participating in Vermont’s Maple Open House next weekend (March 23-24), here are some local favorites you can visit (with links):
Enjoy the next few weeks and may the weather gods take pity on us and bless us with a short (and sweet) mud season ahead.
Stay safe and have fun!

Weston Theater Company's 2024
Summer Season Is Going to Be
A-M-A-Z-I-N-G
| |
|
We're so excited for the Weston Theater Company's upcoming season! Announced earlier this month, the summer lineup will feature five marquee titles that I know will spark joy and have you tapping your toes all summer long.
Drum roll, please . . . da da da dum . . .
-
Jersey Boys - the story of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons
- Junie B. Jones: The Musical (free and especially great for young audiences)
- Pippin - a musical favorite with unforgettable songs and amazing dance numbers.
-
The Porch on Windy Hill - a heartwarming new play with authentic ‘Old Time’ and Bluegrass music.
-
And, the fall show (through most of October) will be The Woman in Black - Fear and fascination collide in this critically acclaimed adaptation of a classic ghost story.
Renewal subscriptions are on sale now and new subscriptions will be available as of March 18. Single tickets can be purchased online starting April 9 or by calling the Weston Box Office at 802-824-5288.
Discounted tickets are available to students and children, and a limited quantity of VTix for Vermont residents who hold a Vermont ID.
Important Notes for the 2024 Theater Season:
- With the Playhouse building on the Weston Green under renovation after the July 2023 flooding, all 2024 performances and the Box Office are at the Walker Farm Theater at 705 Main Street in Weston. This is a beautiful, intimate setting and will bring you closer to the magic than ever before!
- Matinees will be offered on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday afternoons - all summer long
- Evening curtain times remain 7:30 PM to allow more time for pre-show food and drinks - enjoy an early pre-show meal at one of the area's wonderful restaurants ... or a BYOB picnic on the Village Green.
We'll see you at the show!

In the last edition of this newsletter, we recommended some winter vent maintenance tips to keep in mind. This month, we’re focusing on fire prevention and our business insurance provider (MMG) recently shared some excellent Fire Prevention Tips that we thought are important enough to share.
-
Install smoke detectors on each floor of your home and in every bedroom. Vermont law requires photo-electric detectors are in place at the time of any real estate sale. Don't wait until then to install them!
- Change the batteries in smoke detectors twice a year and test them every month.
- Keep an ABC-class fire extinguisher in the kitchen, garage, and any room with a heating device.
- Review fire escape plans with family members often.
According to MMG, cooking causes about 50% of home fires in the United States.
- Never leave cooking pans unattended, especially when cooking with oil.
- Never throw water on a grease/oil fire.
- Do not cook when overtired or inebriated.

Vermont’s location within the 2024 total solar eclipse’s path of totality makes it an ideal place to take in the wonder and spectacle of this natural event.
Northern Vermont will experience a total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. This unique event is expected to draw 50,000 to 200,000 visitors to that area for the day.
A partial solar eclipse will begin at 2:14 p.m.; at 3:26 p.m., a total eclipse will darken Vermont's daytime sky, lasting about 3 minutes. The phenomenon will continue as a partial eclipse until 4:37 p.m. The area impacted by the eclipse will be an east-to-west line from St. Johnsbury, Barre, and Middlebury north to the Canadian border.

There are many reasons why Vermont remains lush and green and beautiful, and one of the most important is that Vermont and Vermonters have a long history of "greening up" our roadsides and communities each spring. As the snow melts, a plethora of debris (okay, let's call it what it is . . . g-a-r-b-a-g-e) appears. Some of it intentionally tossed out, some accidentally, but nonetheless, all of it in need of cleaning up.
What can YOU do about it?!?!!? Join the fun and help out, that's what!
2024 GREEN UP DAY IS MAY 4th! Pick up your Green Up trash bags and get out in your community on Saturday, May 4 to clean up your neighborhood roads and waterways. As a volunteer, you make a huge difference for our environment.
Green Up Day trash bags are distributed throughout the state and are available in most towns about a week before Green Up Day. Click here to find the contact information for your town coordinator and to read the details of what is happening in your town. Volunteers usually gather and pick a section of a local road or other location that they will be responsible for and the trash collected is gathered up by other volunteers, local trash haulers, and in some cases, VTrans.
For more information, visit the Green Up Vermont website at: http://www.greenupvermont.org/

It's March, the height of Vermont's most delicious time of year, so we're celebrating all things MAPLE.
Maple Granola
Makes about 8-10 cups
5 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
1/2 cup shredded unsweetened coconut
1 cup slivered almonds
1/2 to 1 cup pecans, roughly chopped
1/2 cup pepitas or sunflower seeds
2 tablespoons of chia seeds
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt*
1 cup pure Vermont maple syrup (Grade A Dark Color with Robust Taste is best)
1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
1 one-ounce bag of freeze-dried blueberries** (or any freeze-dried fruit)
OR
1 cup dried cranberries, cherries, apricots, or unsweetened dates (or other dried fruit) chopped or diced to 1/4-inch pieces
Optional: 1+/- cup mini-sized semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips
* If you use regular table salt, reduce to 1/4 teaspoon or to taste
** Trader Joe’s has a great selection of freeze-dried fruits.
- Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
- Combine all ingredients EXCEPT the fruit and chocolate chips (if using) in a large mixing bowl and stir to blend gently but thoroughly.
- Add the maple syrup and olive oil and mix well again.
- Spread the mixture onto a large baking sheet lined with a silicone baking mat or aluminum foil, spreading it carefully to create an even layer.
- Bake the granola until light golden brown, approximately one hour, stirring every 15-20 minutes.
- Let the baked mixture cool completely (at least an hour).
- Stir in the dried fruit and chocolate chips if desired.
Serve with yogurt, milk, on top of ice cream, or by the handful!
Note: Using freezer bags or Mason jars, this can be stored in a cool, dark place for up to a month. Any longer, and you may begin to notice the flavors have started to fade.
