Howard's Story

In an era of rapidly rising rents and a severe lack of affordable housing - Maricopa residents are feeling the squeeze. Families are doubling up in residences; vulnerable adults are working longer and resting less; razor-thin personal budget margins are disappearing completely. In this environment, any combination of risk factors, or even a single difficult event - can lead to the unimaginable.

For Howard, it was a disagreement with his adult son that landed him without a place to stay. In his words,

“I was asked to leave with nothing but the shirt on my back. Suddenly I was homeless and very scared.” Unsure of where to turn, Howard asked around.

“I heard about the [Key] Campus helping people in my situation and made my way to the campus. After securing a bed in CASS and staying there for a short period I met Amber, Chris, and Heather [from Keys to Change]. These three were like angels sent from Heaven.”

"Amber became my case manager. She was kind and understanding. [She] listened to all of my concerns and always provided me with reassurance." Howard found placement at one of Keys to Change's Bridge Housing properties. During his four months of stability in Bridge, Howard saved money and planned for his future.

Again in Howard's words, "While in Bridge housing, [the manager] and…staff all looked after my needs. Amber assisted me with staying on track with my spending so that when the time to step up came, I’d be ready for the move.”

Last week, Howard moved into an apartment of his very own.

“I am eternally grateful to Amber for instilling in me that I can do this! I am very happy to say that if you keep the faith and listen to sound logic, you too can have this great outcome.”

Because Howard is our neighbor, Keys to Change is here for him. We know that with the right support and individualized options, homelessness is solvable. Thank you Howard for sharing your story. We wish you all the best and can’t wait to see what this next chapter holds!

Desert Financial Credit Union awards Keys to Change $25,000 for Supportive Services

We are so grateful for the ongoing support of Desert Financial Credit Union! Their gift of $25,000 will allow our Supportive Services team to continue their incredible work. Lead by manager Corie Billingsley, Supportive Services on the Key Campus include the post office, the greeter station, safe storage, and day room; this team also manages the 95-bed Respiro shelter on Campus. For all who come to the Campus, this team provides guidance, customer support, and a friendly face.

Our relationship with Desert Financial is truly a well-rounded partnership. In addition to this gift, their employees also donate individually, year-round, through their Sharing and Caring campaign. When Carlissa and her team visited Campus to drop off this check, the team brought with them hundreds of emergency heat relief kits. They stayed for conversation about homelessness, and a tour of Campus. Thank you, Desert Financial, for your commitment to our mission!
