Foundation Scholarship Deadline April 1
|
On March 25, students gathered at Dini Student Center to learn about WNC's scholarships while enjoying delicious tacos! Thanks to the WNC Foundation, students enjoyed a free lunch and expert assistance for applying for scholarships. The deadline for the WNC Foundation Scholarship Application for the 2024-25 academic year is nearing. Current and prospective students can access the application form at https://wnc.awardspring.com/. It must be completed by April 1 to be considered for more than 300 scholarships ranging anywhere from $500 to $5,000.

Tickets on Sale for WNMTC Production of 'Cinderella' on May 10-19
|
The Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company will present the new Broadway version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's “Cinderella” in eight performances at the Carson City Community Center on weekends May 10-19. Winner of three Drama Desk awards and nine Tony nominations, this new Broadway adaptation is lavishly orchestrated and animated with a witty script that brings refreshing depth to the characters of the classic fairy tale.

Child Development Center's Annual Trike-a-Thon for St. Jude Raises $2,000
|
The annual Trike-A-Thon fundraiser, held by the Child Development Center at Western Nevada College on Friday, March 22, brought together children of all ages to pedal for a cause. Young participants circled the track in the CDC parking lot, their determination matched only by the unwavering support of parents and CDC staff. Together, they raised nearly $2,000.

Capital City Arts Initiative Presents Raices Art Exhibit through April 12
|
Reno artist Ruby Barrientos honors her Mayan ancestry in the Raices (Roots) Art Exhibit, which will be shown through April 12 in the Bristlecone Gallery at Western Nevada College. The exhibit includes mixed media, sculptures, drawings and prodigious paintings and is presented by Capital City Arts Initiative.

ASWN President Suzanna Stankute Receives Regents' Scholar Award
|
Go-getter! Self-starter! Achiever! All of these superlatives describe Western Nevada College student government president Suzanna Stankute and support why she received the 2024 Nevada System of Higher Education's Sam Lieberman Regents' Award.
Suzanna has already graduated from WNC, earning an Associate of Arts degree in 2023, and will graduate again this spring with an Associate of Applied Science degree in Deaf Studies.

Niki Gladys Honored at Chamber's Women of Distinction Luncheon
|
WNC Executive Director of Advancement Niki Gladys was celebrated on International Women's Day on March 8 as the Carson City Chamber of Commerce honored her and nine other women for their achievements. The Women of Distinction were recognized during a luncheon at Gold Dust West in Carson City and the event was sponsored by Campagni Auto Group.

Robert Ciminski Awarded Tenure
|
WNC’s tenure appointees for 2024 followed similar higher education and workplace journeys, and each has served their country. Nursing Instructor Robert Ciminski and Construction Project Management Instructor Nigel Harrison both enrolled and graduated from WNC, then came back to teach at their alma mater. Their dedication to WNC and students was recognized earlier this month when the NSHE Board of Regents approved their tenure.

Longtime WNC History Professor Dr. Doris Dwyer was recognized with the Distinguished Nevadan Award at the NSHE Board of Regents quarterly meeting Feb. 29 and March 1. She taught required and elective history classes and the complete sequence of core humanities courses during her exemplary 35-year career at Western.

Carson City Chapter of U.S. Navy League Honors VRC Coordinator

WNC Veterans Resource Center Coordinator John Jacobson was recently honored by the Carson City chapter of the U.S. Navy League after serving as a guest speaker at its annual meeting. Jacobson’s presentation included what the VRC provides student veterans, dependents of veterans and military personnel.

Exciting news for military personnel! Military credits transfer toward WNC's Associate of General Studies degree. Submit your official Joint Services Transcript, Air Force transcript, CLEP/DANTES test scores, and any other college transcripts to Admission and Records for a transfer credit evaluation. Grads Participating in Commencement Can Purchase Regalia through April 21
|
Graduating students planning to participate in Commencement have less than a month to purchase regalia. A tassel, cap and gown package can be ordered for $39.95, or a cap and tassel can be purchased separately. There also is a $15.95 fee for shipping. Graduation regalia must be purchased online at wncbookstore.com by April 21 to ensure on-time delivery for the ceremonies, which are set for May 20 in Carson City and May 23 in Fallon.

Class Schedules Available to Assist Students with Summer, Fall Registration
|
Registration opens for Summer 2024 and Fall 2024 classes in April. Returning and continuing students can register for summer and fall courses starting on Monday, April 1, while new students can begin registering on Monday, April 8. Class schedules are available at wnc.edu/class-schedule.

BBQ Lunch for Students, Staff Highlights ASWN Election Week
|
To encourage students to vote in the 2024 ASWN election, Student Life presented a BBQ lunch for the campus on March 13 outside Dini Student Center. The Wildcat Veterans Club assisted with the event. Hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, soda and water were served, and students spun a wheel to win prizes.

Seniors Days Bring Many High School Students to Campus to Inspire Futures

The Academic Advising & Access Team rolled out the red carpet for Senior Days on Feb. 29 and March 1 as high school students from Carson City, Dayton, Walker River, Churchill County, Yerington, Aspire and Fernley toured WNC. Students were provided guided tours of the Carson City campus and learned valuable information about the college’s resources, scholarships, and more. They also visited with instructors who shared important and exciting information about their programs.

Fastenal Learns about ROADS, WCTE and CDL Programs during WNC Visit
|
Kerrie Scott, regional recruiter, and Stephen Baker, district manager, of Fastenal toured Western Nevada College earlier this month. The tour focused on Realizing Opportunities for the American Dream to Succeed (ROADS); Workforce, Career & Technical Education (WCTE) programs; the Commercial Driver's License (CDL) program; and the future site of Career Services. Fastenal is a national company that partners with organizations to simplify and secure the supply chain for a vast range of industrial products.

WNC’s Continuing Education program is accepting proposals for July-December 2024 Community Education courses. Courses are offered in Carson City, Fallon and online, and are open to any member of the community. These classes provide opportunities to learn new skills, advance careers and better lives in a low-pressure, encouraging environment. Saturday Night Star Parties Start an Hour Later Beginning in April
|
The weekly Saturday Night Star Parties at Jack C. Davis Observatory will begin at 7 p.m. starting on April 6. Learn about the universe and enjoy looking at far-away stars with the observatory's variety of telescopes. Through September, enjoy these weekly get-togethers from 7 to 11 p.m. at the facility, located at 2269 Vanpatten Ave.
