March is Women's History Month

A word from Ms. Felicia Vargas, the dynamic Capstone Coordinator at Siembra. We are proud to have her as a powerful female leader and influential role model:

March is Women’s Month, a month to honor and celebrate women. Looking back at history and thinking about the women who fought the right to vote in the suffrage movement and the abolitionists who continue to stand up and fight for the gender pay gap. The women who continue to advocate for us when there is a sexist and masochistic comment behind closed doors.

This month we pay a tribute to our abuelas, tias, mothers, cousins and friends who had fought bigotry and “baboso.” We thank you! Yes, we still have more work to do. To the generations Z and Alpha may you continue to use your privilege to protect those who are oppressed. I will never forget my family and the women who paved the way for my freedom now.

“My mother was a dominant force in our family. And I always saw her as the leader. And that was great for me as a young woman, because I never saw that women had to be dominated by men.” Dolores Huerta.

What is Community Learning?

This year we want to make sure that we recognize all the amazing learning that happens both in and out of school. One of the ways that we engage in learning outside of school is through 10 Community Based Learning days that take place on various weekends throughout the school year. These 10 days are required and provide opportunities for students to explore our community, engage with our learning partners, and are linked to various events that are happening around the Albuquerque area. Each of these Community Based Learning days are completed independently and will be organized and announced at least 1 week before the events occur. March's Community Learning Day is Saturday, March 23rd. Please be on the look out for more information on our Community Learning Day.

If you have any questions please reach out to your students’ Success Coach or to Edward Ramirez at e.ramirez@siembraabq.org.
