Packed Lunches
At the ELC, thousands of guests visit each year to explore our beautiful, educational island. Throughout the years, we have seen many iterations of on-the-go lunches including: school lunches with individually plastic-wrapped items, restaurant food with fully compostable packing, and home-packed lunches in reusable containers that leave nothing behind.
Whether you are packing your lunch for your trip to the ELC, school, work, or any outing, here are a few things to consider:
- Nutrition - Try creating your packed lunch from whole ingredients and food you have on hand at home. A good rule of thumb when considering an items is the fewer ingredients, the better. For those of us with a sweet tooth, a sugary taste can be found in healthier foods, such as apple slices (some choose to add a squeeze of lemon juice for preservation), dates, or local fruit such as lychees, mangos, or mulberries.
- Prep time - There are only so many hours in a day, and the idea of food prep can be daunting, but it doesn’t have to take up much time! Thankfully, countless fast and wonderful meal-prep ideas exist online and throughout social media. With some quick research, you find find meal-prep recipes to fit your time budget. Think wraps, pasta salads, and beyond!
- Packaging - When possible, pack your lunch into reusable containers. If the food needs to be kept cold, remember your insulated lunch bag and ice packs, which can be found at your local store (or through a quick internet search if you prefer online shopping). Don’t forget to fill your reusable water bottle!
Remember that switching to a more sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyle is a process. Take it one step at a time and be gentle with yourself!
