GREETINGS FROM BCAW

by Hank Posnanski, Jr., BCAW President

Hello fellow proprietors! I hope this writing finds everyone well and that your businesses are thriving.

Speaking of our businesses, their continued success largely depends on youth bowlers since they are the future of our sport. I was fortunate to be able to volunteer for the recent 2024 BCAW High School Bowling Club State Championships in early March at The Ashwaubenon Bowling Alley in Green Bay. It was exhilarating to witness the excitement and enthusiasm from the competitors. At the state tournament, these young bowlers seem to get better and better each year, especially with the fundamentals. I’d like to thank Matt and Ryan Orvis – proprietors at The Ashwaubenon Bowling Alley – for their incredible knowledge about bowling tournaments. The Orvis brothers and their fine staff did an excellent job.

It is a major undertaking for any bowling center to host our high school state tournament. The BCAW is very thankful that we have proprietors in Wisconsin who are willing to forgo significant business to host our tournament.

Congratulations to all the state champions and to everyone who qualified. They’re all talented bowlers and it’s quite an accomplishment for teams and individuals to advance to state. A special thank you goes out to Phil LaPorte. BCAW appreciates the Wisconsin State USBC for providing the Phil A. LaPorte Scholarships, which total $3,000 to our top five singles finalists. Check out results here.

Following the high school state tournament, we were back in Green Bay at the All Star Team Challenge. The “best-of-the-best” showed up at Riviera Lanes on March 9 for this one-day event. All 14 BCAW high school districts were invited to send their top five individuals based on their year-end fill percentage to send a boys and girls all-star team. BCAW provided $1,700 in scholarships to our top performers in both the singles and team portion of this event. Check out results here. It was incredible to see the excitement and high-level competition!

Thank you to BCAW Executive Director Roger Dalkin and BCAW Program Manager Patrick Brettingen for all the hard work they do for the high school, bowling and middle school bowling programs.

While traveling around the state, I was able to stop at several different bowling centers. I’ll tell you this: I'm very happy and proud to be from Wisconsin, where we take such pride in operating solid bowling center businesses for people to come in and enjoy. Well, we are all in the same business; not one of us has the same center. We are all different and unique. And we all take pride in that.

Pepsi regional events rolling in April

Youth bowlers in five separate age divisions have advanced from their local in-center qualifying events to regional tournaments.

Close to 1,900 youth bowlers are competing in the 16 regional events being held statewide on two weekends: April 6-7 and April 13-14.

Top boys' and girls' bowlers in U12, U15 and U18 divisions will advance from the regionals to the Wisconsin Pepsi USBC Youth State Championships May 11 at Revs Bowl, Bar & Grill in Oshkosh (boys' divisions) and Rolling Thunder in Neenah (girls' divisions.) Bowlers in the U8 and U10 divisions compete for scholarships and awards but do not advance past the regional competition.

NOTE: Each youth bowler who qualifies for and participates in a regional event during the 2023-24 Wisconsin Pepsi USBC Youth Championships will receive an additional $25 scholarship. This is a one-time expenditure from scholarship money provided to BCAW as a SMART scholarship provider, which will otherwise be forfeited if not awarded by Aug. 1, 2024. Also, all bowlers at the Wisconsin Pepsi USBC Youth Championships (state tournament) will receive a minimum $100 scholarship.

Entry deadlines near for two Adult-Youth scholarship tournaments

Time is running out to submit your entries for two BCAW adult-youth events offering thousands of dollars in scholarships.

Entry forms and fees for the Wisconsin Adult-Youth Open must be received in the BCAW office no later than March 27. The tournament will be held the weekend of April 6 & 7 at Watertown Bowl "18" in Watertown.

This is a direct-entry doubles tournament created for scratch level youth bowlers in Wisconsin. The youth bowler must be a current season (2023-24) youth member of the WI State USBC. Adults do not have to be certified to participate.

Entry forms and fees for the Wisconsin Adult-Youth Scholarship Tournament must be received in the BCAW office no later than April 2. This year's finals will be held at Dream Lanes in Madison over two weekends (April 27-28 and May 4-5).

The tournament will consist of U10, U14 and U18 divisions. There is no family requirement to participate. Youth bowlers may advance to the state finals tournament with more than one adult bowler, increasing their opportunity to win a scholarship. Last year the BCAW awarded $4,425 in scholarships at this event.

Extra scholarships will be awarded at the Adult-Youth Scholarship Tournament. The BCAW will award a $25 scholarship to every youth bowler who qualifies for and bowls in the state finals. This is a one-time expenditure from scholarship money provided to BCAW as a SMART scholarship provider, which will otherwise be forfeited if not awarded by Aug. 1, 2024. BCAW estimates there will be an added $5,000 in scholarships awarded at this year's state finals.
