President's Message...

Hello David,

We had a very busy February with a welcome breakfast for new members, a dinner/speaker event, and a pop-up social event.

To start the month, we had our New Member/Prospect Breakfast on Feb 11 with 20 enthusiastic new members and prospects. We all enjoyed a tour by host Bruce Pascal of his Hot Wheels Museum, a hearty buffet breakfast and then several Amity officers talked to the guests about the benefits of Amity and how to get the most out of being a member. Thanks to Bruce and David Goldberg for hosting this event and to David Grover and Don Klein for their help!

So far, we have 13 new members for 2024 with a total membership of 173. Thanks to David Grover, Steve Wollins, Allen Orenberg, Adam Abrahams, Steve Feldman and the entire Membership Team for all of their hard work.

On February 21st, we had our first dinner event of 2024 with our guest speaker, former Post columnist Bob Levey. More than 90 guys attended the event at Maggiano's where we indulged in good food, drinks and good times with our Amity Brothers. The 50/50 raffle collected more than $375 for charity and congratulations to our winners: Matthew Mintz, Bruce Pascal, and Leigh Press.

Bob Levey entertained our group with great stories about the Post including Woodward & Bernstein and Kay Graham and the glory years of his time writing about Washington. We even learned he was a championship Bridge player and that was how he became Ben Bradley's first hire at the Washington Post.

Thanks to a host of giuys for making all of this happen -- Steve Strickman, Steve Feldman, Dan Ellenbogen, Neil Brami, Bob Moses, David Grover, Adam Abrahams, Steve Wollins, Barry Sandler, Jerry Frishman, Tony Marill, Ira Greenspan, Albert Bloomfield, Ron Ziegel, and David Gavin.

On February 27th, Amity held its first Popup Event of 2024 at Bowlero Bowling off Shady Grove Road where more than 40 guys participated and had a great time bowling, noshing and mingling with out Amity Brothers. Thanks to Ron Zeigel for all of his work organizing and running this great event and for Dan Ellenbogen for helping with name tags. Mitch Rotker was crowned our championship bowler of the evening and a special shout out to Don Klein for converting a 7 5 10 split.

Board and Committee Recruitment

It takes a village to run Amity, not just the Executive Board. We have been so lucky in 2024, to have such a great group of Amity Volunteers serve on our Board and as Committee Chairs. Available committees are the following: Membership Committee; Philanthropy Committee; Speakers Committee; Hospitality Committee; and the Communications Committee. If you are interested in volunteering to help out on the Board, as a Committee Chair and/or a Committee Member, please contact Past-President Steve Wollins, sjwollins@gmail.com or President-Elect David Grover, degolf1827@verizon.net. Thanks for your consideration.

NUTS AND BOLTS

On Sunday, March 24th, from 3 - 4:30 pm, Amity Prez David Merkin will lead a short hike through Rockville. We will meet at the Ritchie Park Elementary School Parking Lot, 1514 Dunster Road, Rockville, MD 20854. Anyone is welcome including spouses, significant others, kids, grandkids or dogs on a leash. We can discuss anything Amity wise or not or just enjoy nature. Bring a good pair of sneakers/walking shoes and some water and/or a snack in case you get thirsty or hungry. The hike will mainly be on sidewalks and will have a few rolling hills through Rockville/Potomac and will be at a pace where nobody will be left behind. Email David at amityprez@amityclubofwashington.org if you plan on joining us so I know whom to expect for the hike. In future months, I will try and lead a bicycle ride.
