Dysphagia Research Society:
DRS 2024 took place March 12-15 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. IDDSI is most appreciative to DRS for the opportunity to connect with the many participants attending the conference at our IDDSI booth. We were so pleased to hear from many attendees about their implementation initiatives and ideas. The conference program and the many posters brought cutting edge research and we continue to be pleased to see IDDSI has become a useful standardized tool in research. On top of the scientific work, the social committee organized a truly island social experience against the beauty and culture of Puerto Rico.

Here is an example of IDDSI in research…
Charlotte Cunningham, a Freshman majoring in Psychology from Virginia Tech, recently presented her science research, "International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative (IDDSI) Thickness Labels for Drinkable Commercial Kefir to Improve the Lives of Persons with Dysphagia and Other Swallowing Disorders" at the National Collegiate Research Conference (NCRC) at Harvard University in Cambridge, MA. Cunningham presented during Poster Session III in the "Engineering, Mathematics, Applied Sciences" category."
Her research involves implementing kefir, a fermented dairy beverage, using the IDDSI Flow Test and Framework to aid those with swallowing disorders. She has conducted three years of research and is currently surveying speech pathologists and those who have or assist those with swallowing disorders.

Thank you, Charlotte for sharing your research with IDDSI!

Patient Safety Recognition for IDDSI Culinary IRG team.
Congratulations to Preston Walker & James Ball, Oak House Kitchen (OHK) as “Gold” award winner for Patient Safety of the year at the Health Services Journal Partnership awards 2024. Preston and James are IDDSI Culinary IRG team co-leaders. IDDSI is so proud of them!!!

|
OHK (formerly Oak House Kitchen) is delighted to announce that their partnership with the East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust (ESHT) has been officially named as the “Gold” winner of the Patient Safety of the Year at the HSJ Partnership Awards 2024. The collaboration saw the specialist team partner with specialist Speech & Language Therapists in ESHT, Anita Smith and Laura Jones, to launch an immersive, cost-effective e-learning programme that has been vastly improving the lives of those suffering with dysphagia since launch.
The HSJ Partnership Awards recognise an outstanding dedication to improving healthcare and effective collaboration with the NHS. OHK co-founders Preston Walker and James Ball are experts in the area of health and social care catering, IDDSI and the texture modification of foods.
The OHK and ESHT partnership was established in 2020 to create an interactive, immersive, and educational program tailored to address the diverse training needs of ESHT staff and enhance patient safety. Following the introduction of the eLearning-based there were no ‘never’ events or near misses and vast improvements in the quality of incidents being reported and acted upon. The collaboration and project was selected and put forward for the award based on its ambition, value and the positive outcomes that the project has had on both practitioners and patients.
