Jia Stolfi
Meet Jia! Jia is a junior pursuing a dual degree in Marketing and Journalism. She was recently a participant on the Community Development Alternative Break to Costa Rica, where she got to build a dormitory for teachers, learn about the local culture, and make lifelong friends.
Jia went to a free, academic summer enrichment program as a child which had a tremendous positive impact on her education. The program taught her the value of giving back to those less fortunate and she has tried to volunteer as much as possible since, specifically to address homelessness and food insecurity.
Jia is a member of the Outing Club. In her free time, she enjoys doing anything adventurous including rock climbing, surfing, skateboarding, and skiing.

“It was my first time at an event like this. I love the photo booth and took pictures with my conversation partner. I enjoyed decorating the cookie. It tasted yummy and looked nice. I made a card to give to my friend.”

Yoga
Sometimes yoga becomes a health and wellness space that tends to be less diverse. Currently, we are trying to work towards more representation in the health and wellness field. The Puerto Rican/ Latin American Cultural Center and Community Outreach are teaming up to start a yoga series taught by instructors of color. This activity will be offered at times that are in the middle of the day, in the middle of the week, in the middle of campus. The goal of this is to provide students with a chance to find calm amidst the chaos. Yoga is a practice that can aid with physical and mental health, and thus by providing yoga during the week, students will have the chance to slow down and promote self care.
The first yoga session offered in this collaboration was held on February 22nd, taught by Rhonda Watson Wishart. Rhonda has taught in various spaces, such as the YMCA in Putnam, CT and chair yoga at senior centers. More collaborations with other cultural centers here at UConn are in the works. Our next yoga event will be taught by Suheidi Rodriguez, who has her own yoga studio in Putnam, CT and offers a yoga retreat in Puerto Rico, yearly. The date for the next event is TBD, and we are so excited to work with her!
