March 2022
2021 Outstanding Citizen of the Year
Compassionate, generous, altruistic, selfless, kind, and philanthropic were some of the words to describe longtime Mt. Pleasant resident Eileen Jennings during Saturday’s annual Mt. Pleasant Area Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet. Jennings was recognized in front of a crowd of 285 community members as the 2021 Citizen of the Year.
Jennings moved to Mt. Pleasant in 1980 and served as an attorney for Central Michigan University for 29 years. Actively engaged in many organizations while working, Jennings continued to be involved even after retirement. She has served in a volunteer capacity for organizations like Central Michigan Community Hospital, United Way, Friends of Isabella Seniors, Mt. Pleasant Area Community Foundation, and Christmas Outreach. She is a member of the Faith Weavers, the Zonta Club, and was one of the first women to join the Rotary Club of Mt. Pleasant. An active member of Rotary for 32 years, Jennings has served as Club President, a District Officer, and District Governor.
Jennings was praised for her efforts to understand and advocate for people in Mt. Pleasant and across the world. “She looks for every opportunity to improve our community, making it a richer place to live,” said Steve Pung, 2020 Citizen of the Year. “She seeks those who need help, and who are unable to help themselves, and she enlists the aid of all those she encounters in her missions. She seeks attention, not for herself, but to shine the light on an opportunity to make an improvement, to create a relationship, to build something new, to take care of a problem, and to serve.”

Tickets are now available for "A Northern Tradition," Mid Michigan College’s annual fundraiser, which is planned for April 10 at Jay’s Sporting Goods in Clare. More than $1.7 million has been raised through this event over the last 20 years, benefiting the Mid Michigan College Foundation.

Mike Avery will serve as the honorary host at the event. Mike is a long-time Michigan-based broadcaster with more than forty years in the business and a strong advocate of the outdoor lifestyle. His three-hour weekly Outdoor Magazine radio show promotes the history and tradition of hunting, fishing, shooting, and trapping.

This year’s commemorative art highlights photography by featured artist Steve Jessmore. Steve is a 30-year photojournalist, five-time Michigan Photographer of the Year, Robert F. Kennedy Photojournalism awardee, and former Chief Photographer of the Flint Journal. He is an avid outdoor photographer with a love for all wildlife, especially birds. In 2021, two of his bird images swept the professional division of the national 2021 Audubon Photography contest, winning 1st place and honorable mention.

“This year’s event represents a welcome return to Jay’s Sporting Goods,” said Tom Olver, Executive Director of the Mid Michigan College Foundation. “We’re thrilled to offer a tremendous experience for our attendees.”

Each $75 ticket, provides the attendee with a $25 gift certificate to Jay’s Sporting Goods and a commemorative art print or note card set. Attendees will also enjoy refreshments from local restaurants, chef-crafted wild game tastings, creative mocktails, various desserts, and live music by Full Cord Bluegrass.

Tickets are available for purchase online at midmich.edu/ant or by texting TRADITION to 91999.

For more information about A Northern Tradition, visit midmich.edu/ant or contact Tom Olver at tolver@midmich.edu or (989) 386-6675.
